Some Democrats dream of Kerry-Edwards ticket
Some Democrats dream of Kerry-Edwards ticket

By JIM MORRILL Knight Ridder Newspapers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bumper stickers have been printed. A petition drive has started. A seller on eBay recently offered the domain name KerryEdwards.org for $25,000.

With Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts piling up wins in Democratic presidential contests — including Saturday in caucuses in Nevada and the District of Columbia — speculation has turned to his potential running mate. No one has received more attention than Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.

“They're perfect together,” said Jimmy Dannelly, a 29-year-old Columbia, S.C., banker who voted for Kerry in that state's primary. “Kerry has that war experience, and Edwards has so much enthusiasm.”

Still trying to win the nomination himself, Edwards has denied interest in being anybody's No. 2. But last Sunday on ABC, he seemed to hedge.

“You don't know what's going to happen a month, three months, six months from now,” he said. “As I sit here today, I intend to fight with everything I've got to be the nominee.”

Aides denied that Edwards had changed his mind. There are lots of reasons Edwards would discourage the speculation. For one, it could make people see him as vice presidential material, not presidential.

Should Kerry claim the nomination, there would be no shortage of potential running mates. Among those mentioned:

• New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, of Hispanic descent, who could help Kerry with that growing voter bloc.

• Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, the state's most popular Democrat for two decades.

• Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri, who is popular with labor in the Midwest battleground.

• Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack or Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, to add a fresh-faced executive from regions outside Kerry's comfort zone.

• Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, to add the voltage of her phenomenal popularity, but at the risk of alienating the many who find her extreme.

Although each offers strengths, many see Edwards as someone who could balance Kerry geographically while offering a complementary personality

1. I have no objection to this ticket
evne though Kerry is not my first choice andneither is Edwards because of their war stance.

We , actually, have NO choice. We MUST vote for the Democrat or be destroyed by another four years of the evil, war mongering, stupid president, Bush.

3. clark as vp
Hi, newbie - left democrats.com (lousy moderator). I was and am a Clark supporter and think he would be a terrific asset to any ticket. He actually is more progressive than several of the other candidates.
