Sen. Boxer Plans to Confound Republicans
Sen. Boxer Plans to Confound Republicans

WASHINGTON - Democrats across the country are fond of saying "anybody but Bush" for president. In the California race for the U.S. Senate, Republicans have a saying of their own: "anybody but Boxer."

She's too liberal, they complain of Sen. Barbara Boxer. She's an extremist, they charge. In the words of California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim, Boxer is "out of synch."

Yet the GOP twice has failed to find that somebody who could defeat Boxer. This time, with Democrat Gray Davis (news - web sites) recalled as governor and replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), they hope Californians might be more accepting of a Republican challenger.

Boxer has heard it all before, even when she first campaigned for the Senate in 1992. She says she fully expects to confound her opponents again when she asks voters for a third term in November.

Sen. Boxer Plans to Confound Republicans

For those in California, is this a safe seat?

1. Boxer has to fight
But she's considered relatively safe, or at least safer than when Fong ran against her 6 years ago.

2. she is not safe
it will depend on who the opponent is. if it's a moderate republican or someone who comes across as moderate she will have a tough time. much of the reason she won before was because the republicans were right wingers.

3. Yeah but this is a general election
Ahhnold or any other RINO won't help Repugs in California, simply because of the extremist occupant in the White House.

4. Conservatives
In Ca., republicans, in general elections, shoot themselves in the foot by nominating conservatives for gov and senate.

6. She's relatively secure...
They've unsuccessfully tried to unseat her before. This doesn't mean that she shouldn't watch her back but I think the mood of the people will work against a Republican victory.
