Hull was late opposing war in Iraq, Obama says
Democratic Senate hopeful Barack Obama lit into millionaire investor M. Blair Hull in a radio debate Monday, accusing the front-runner of falsely claiming he had been outspoken in opposing the war in Iraq.
"The fact of the matter is, Blair, you were silent when those decisions were being made, and you didn't end up being outspoken about it until well after the war had been completed," Obama said. "You were AWOL on this issue."
The seven Democrats hoping to succeed outgoing Republican Sen. Peter Fitzgerald met for an hourlong debate in Springfield, sponsored by the Illinois Radio Network, WBBM-AM and WTAX-AM in Springfield.
The candidates met in the historic Old State Capitol, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "House Divided" speech. And the divisions were starting to show among the Democrats, who had generally not done much disagreeing in past encounters.
