Stephanie Herseth in favor of FMA?????
From daily kos:

Stephanie Herseth, candidate for South Dakota's at-large congressional district, has come out in favor of the amendment.

I sent her $25! I'm almost tempted to ask for it back. Anyone know what the deal is on this?

1. I think South Dakota is an extremely conservative state
That's why I don't think Daschle should be our Senate leader. If he gets too liberal, then he will get defeated for reelection as a Senator, and that wouldn't help us.

It would be better to have a leader from a more moderate state.

13. If Daschle
did not have a leadership position in the Senate then the odds are, sadly, that he would definitely not retain this seat. It's his position, particularly when majority leader, and ability to deliver the pork back home that allows him to win in SD. As just 'another Senator', he's probably out of there.

2. She comes from an conservative state that went overwhelmingly for Bush
It's not at all surprising that she would be in favor (at least publicly) of the amendment; any South Dakota candidate in favor of gay marriage would be toast on election day. But believe me, she would be a much, much better representative than the Republican who's also running for the seat. Don't let this one issue dissuade you from voting for her.

3. This is horrible: I was considering sending her money, too.
The thing is: she could have dodged the issue pretty easily.

"I'm against gay marriage, but it should be up to the voters of South Dakota to decide what to do about it. No changes to the constitution."

There are other Democrats more worthy of support.

4. I'm dissapionted but beggers can't be choosers
It's an important issue for me, but I'm not willing to let it become a litmus test.

5. Hey, as long as she's not in favor of the FWA
Federal Womb Amendment.

6. We have the same problem in Louisiana
Mary Landrieu
and now our governor, Kathleen Blanco

we Democrats are furious with both of them
they are Dems, to be sure
but roll over and play dead from time to time

this is how we can have Dems from Louisiana
they have to be 'rebublican democrats'

it is infuriating
but it beats the hell out of Bobby Jindal

8. don't let the perfect ruin the good

There's no other way to play this in South Dakota.

First things first: one less vote for DeLay, one more for Pelosi.

Btw, Kos is useful for information but always seems to be getting stuck in some doctrinaire rut more problem Left than liberal. Don't put money on his unsubstantiated predictions unless you have a lot to waste. He posts around here, btw, but only very occasionally since Dean went done the tubes. His nic is pretty transparent.

9. Independent Confirmation?
Can anyone provide a link that independently confirms Kos' report? If she does support it, I think that's a serious issue... Why couldn't she just use the line the Repubs are using "I'm against gay marriage but I don't think an amendment is necessary.?"

I still wish her the best of luck, as I do Brad Carson who's running for the U.S. Senate, even though he's about as conservative a Democrat as you can find.

Best,

14. Rapid City Journal article corraborates this
Stephanie Herseth, the likely Democratic candidate in a June 1 special election for the U.S. House, released this statement through her campaign office: "I agree with the president on this issue. Marriage should be between a man and a woman."

10. Pathetic
Both this candidates position and some of the posters to this thread that would support her, some of the same folks that felt Dean was treasonous because he didn't hold a balloon drop at his civil unions bill signing.

Is this what we've really become as a party? We would throw support to a candidate that has no problem with frivolously amending the constitution? That's what her argument should be against the Bush position. It doesn't matter what her beliefs are of what marriage should be, it doesn't belong in the constitution.

This certainly takes winning at all costs to a new level.

11. I agree and would be
VERY disappointed if true. I would like to see a verification of this however instead of just a rumor. I can find nothing besides blogs to support or deny this.

12. This is all I've found
on the subject and it sounds (unfortunately) like the rest of the politicians from SD. There is NO mention of support for the amendment however.

>>"Stephanie Herseth, the likely Democratic candidate in a June 1 special election for the U.S. House, released this statement through her campaign office: "I agree with the president on this issue. Marriage should be between a man and a woman.''

Larry Diedrich, the Republican House nominee, said he would vote for the amendment "from everything I understand that's in the bill right now, anyway.''

"It's one of those issues that represents the fabric of this country,'' Diedrich said.">>>
