It was the type of voter rally that Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones likes to see in her district.

Hundreds of voters, elected officials, influential ministers and activists packed into a Cleveland church to promote a well-qualified candidate who happens to be black.

But last Friday's gathering at Antioch Baptist Church on the city's East Side was not one Tubbs Jones could outwardly celebrate.

The people came together for Barack Obama, the first black presidential front-runner in history. Tubbs Jones is campaigning for Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first female presidential front-runner in history...

The flavor and fervor of the civil rights movement hung heavy in the air on the chilly Sunday morning.

A child played "We Shall Overcome" plaintively on her flute. From his pulpit, the Rev. Otis Moss Jr. liberally quoted from the well-known words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his friend and mentor.

He asked all the registered voters to stand, and nearly every member of his congregation at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church did.

"Now do you realize that you are standing, witnessing what people died for, bled for, went to jail for?" he asked. "We will not flag or fail. Hallelujah!...



Tubbs Jones' loyalty may face severe test

Cleveland Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is an enthusiastic supporter of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. She dived into the campaign early and has been featured prominently in the senator's presidential bid.

I'm enjoying her national exposure. I think she is, too.

Lately, Tubbs Jones also has been challenging Sen. Barack Obama's readiness to be president. She doesn't seem to think he's qualified. That is a perfectly reasonable position for her to adopt in support of Clinton.

I'm enjoying that dustup, too. It takes courage...
