"The role of government is making life a little more fair."
Dean 1998 campaign
SNIP...."In this campaign he is the defender of social programs, the champion of children. "The central issue in this campaign is not the size of government. It's how much compassion the government has," said Dean in Thursday's debate here in Bellows Falls. "The role of government is making life a little more fair."

I like this statement. It says a lot about his character.

Source from JetJaguar:
October 3, 1998, Saturday, BC cycle
SECTION: State and Regional
LENGTH: 795 words
HEADLINE: A weekly perspective on Vermont affairs
BYLINE: By CHRISTOPHER GRAFF, Associated Press Writer
DATELINE: BELLOWS FALLS, Vt.

This was in response to my asking about the statement about him that is making the rounds that he tried to cut benefits to the blind and disabled, etc. The quote is from this reporter, and no attribution. Still looking for that. Then in the next paragraph is the fair government statement by Dean. Still hoping for proof on that statement about the blind and disabled.

1. Bingo!
Not to mention that our society thrives when members of the under-privileged classes are given opportunities that give them upward mobility. More importantly, we are losing opportunities that give people a chance to form bonds with this country. The current policies are geared to keep us at each other's throat and there's no one in sight to bring us together as a country.

Maybe that's why the Republicans want to monopolize all of our icons like the American flag. The younger generations will never really know the sense of country that many of us older Americans grew up with. Intead, they'll just learn to respond to symbols, reinforced by underlying prejudices.

3. What is the quote...
that goes, essentially, "The measure of a society is not how it treats it most important members, but how it treats the least."??
I know I don't have it exactly right, but you know what I mean. It is much more important to me that we take care of the people who fall to the bottom rather than hold up those on the top.

2. "The role of government is making life a little more fair."
Yep, that is what my parents believed and what I believe also.
