Campaign challenges for Kerry
The Dean factor

The analysts agree that Dean, by contrast, has defined his message that he was against the war in Iraq, and has attracted supporters who may not otherwise agree with his stances against further gun control and for the death penalty.

Candidates will need ample funds to keep their campaigns alive through Super Tuesday on March 2, when Massachusetts, New York, California and a handful of other states go to the polls. Dean has been able to match or outdo Kerry in raising money, thanks, in part, to an aggressive Internet fund-raising campaign.

But Debra Kozikowski of Chicopee, the vice chairwoman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, said she is convinced the Democratic nominee will be Kerry. Dean is "a wonderful guy" but he's a "flash in the pan," Kozikowski said.

She believes that Kerry's message should focus on jobs. "Putting Americans back to work is the message for this campaign year," Kozikowski said. " 'It's the economy, stupid,' was done by Bill Clinton (in 1992), and we've come full circle and we're right back to that. Another Republican has ruined the economy and taken away Americans' dream for a better future, and he happens to be the son of the one who did it last time."
