Dean's tears into DeLay on voucher vote

Dean Says House GOP Leaders' Action Marks New Low for Party
Burlington-- Howard Dean today condemned House Republican leaders for scheduling a crucial vote on, and then approving, the first federally-imposed school voucher program for the District of Columbia last night:

"Scheduling a vote on school vouchers to take place at the exact hour of the Democratic Presidential debate sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus marks a new low for the Republican Party.

"It is outrageous that Tom Delay would schedule a vote of such critical importance to the children and the public school system of the District of Columbia knowing full well that two House members running for President as well as the members of the Congressional Black Caucus were scheduled to be out of town for a presidential debate.

"This is just another example of the divisive, underhanded tactics that have become the signature trademark of the Republican-controlled House. Whether in their attempts to reverse freely held elections as in California or to grab power through unprecedented redistricting in Texas, the right wing of the Republican party continues to demonstrate what low regard they have for the democratic process.

"Beyond my outrage at their tactics, I am deeply opposed to the result of this vote which would impose a voucher system on a local school district. I strongly oppose voucher programs which divert taxpayer money to private schools and weaken our public school system."

5. Dear Kerry/Edwards/Gep/etc supporters
This is yet another reason why I support Dean. Those other guys are good Dems, but they just won't fight for what I believe in.

6. Another problem for Dean
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 12:59 PM by Nicholas_J
Over 58 percent of hispanic democrat swing voters SUPPORT school vouchers.

This is HIGHER than support for school vouchers among Republicans.

Hispanics view the Democratic party more favorably than the Republican party on many domestic issues, but their views are closer to Republicans' on issues like gay marriage, school vouchers and tax cuts. And while many candidates on both sides are trying to learn to speak Spanish, that doesn't matter to most Hispanic voters: 75 percent of Hispanic voters say it would not make a difference to their vote whether or not a candidate speaks Spanish.

8. Never mind that Dean's position is correct...
If you can't attack his position, you have to figure out a way to spin this as a negative for Dean...yawn.

But then, if you are right about Dean, he's sure to see this and change his position, in order to get the Hispanic vote.

11. Cool Beans
I'm glad Dean is taking the high road on this one, recognizing that the demands of the campaign sometimes make it (literally) impossible to run back to Capital Hill for every vote.

13. Slightly off topic, but what was the final vote?
I know it's the (lack of) principal of the thing.

Just curious.
