Glickman rules out Senate run against Brownback
WASHINGTON - Dan Glickman took himself out of U.S. Senate consideration Tuesday.

The move appears to make Sam Brownback's seat safer than ever and highlights Kansas Democrats' continuing problems with fielding federal candidates.

Glickman, the former nine-term Democratic congressman from Wichita and secretary of agriculture under President Clinton, said that for the foreseeable future he's staying at Harvard University, where he directs the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government.

While never saying never, Glickman, 58, said "something would have to open from the heavens" for him to run again.

1. There was no Dem to oppose Roberts in 2002.
It's disgusting when no one will even run.

2. This goes beyond being a shame.
Brownback and Roberts are arrogant assholes. And their staff all too often mirrors that.

Why I think this: Both of my sons have an auto-immune disorder called alopecia areata. They're both totally bald. (Quite handsome, in my opinion, and distinctive looking) We belong to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (www.naaf.org) which every fourth or fifth year holds their national conference in Washington DC for the express purpose of having the membership lobby their senators and representatives on behalf of NAAF and further funding into hair growth research. It's important to know here that NAAF itself has funded well over a million dollars (probably above 2 million by now) of research on its own. We're simply asking that we get our share of funding from NIH, above and beyond what we ourselves have raise.

I've done this four different times now, and once again this most recent time the Republicans, Brownback and Roberts, were utterly unresponsive to this request, and the Democrat, Dennis Moore, was very responsive and wrote the letter we (NAAF) wanted him to.

Doing this occasional lobbying stint has been very interesting over the years.

I wish we'd get another Democrat from Kansas in Washington.

3. unfortuneatly there hasn't been a Dem Senator elected from Kansas
since the 1800's.

On a separate note, how's Kathleen Sebelius doing?

5. Actually it was George McGill who won in 1930 and in 1932
before losing in 1938.

4. There goes that seat
Without Glickman or Moore, Democrats are completely out of luck until Kathleen Sebelius starts building up some credentials. Hopefully Pat Roberts will retire in 2008, which would mean that either Glickman, Moore, or Sebelius would be able to take on an open seat. However, it's a shame that we can't oust that Repuke Brownback.
