Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 10:11 PM by DJcairo
When on K-street it's clear that Carville gave it to him?

hmmm

K street was great though wasn't it? Carville and Matalin are hilarious.

Dean need's to understand that every time he bends the truth, even a little bit, its another GOP attack add in the making!

about it and he did his famous by now, "who me? What are you talking about? I can up with that line myself." Let's go to the tape.

TV Show Brought Debate Plus for Dean
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

ASHINGTON, Sept. 12 — Howard Dean got help from an unusual source in preparing for the Democratic debate in Baltimore on Tuesday: two veteran political consultants appearing with him on a television series.

One of Dr. Dean's best-received lines was fed to him by James Carville and Paul Begala in the taping of the mock reality show "K Street." His unusual source of help came to light last night at a screening of the new HBO show.

"If a percentage of minorities that's in your state has anything to do with how you connect with African-American voters, then Trent Lott would be Martin Luther King," he said to laughter and applause at the real debate.

In addition, Dr. Dean was shown using a line that he also used in the debate to argue that he could appeal to blacks, despite coming from an overwhelmingly white state, Vermont.

"I'll tell you why I connect with African-American audiences,"' he said. "I'm the only white politician that ever talks about race in front of white audiences."

Dr. Dean was later chastised by opponents who noted that many of the Democratic candidates regularly discussed racial issues with all audiences.

33. Well, some people sure are habitual liars...
The claim: "the Dean campaign says he came up with the Trent Lott line himself"

Your "answer" to the question about where and when they said that:
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/13/politics/campaigns/13DEAN.html
doesn't actually say anything such.
Who are the habitual liars...? Just examine the evidence and

3. How do you know
That what Carville said on K Street wasn't scripted, based on a remark Dean made?
For all you know Dean said it during the prep and then they decided it would be fun to have it look like it came from Carville.

I think reading K Street like tea leaves will be a futile occupation.

He sounded surprised that the Trent Lott line was the only thing he lifted from the show.

I do get the feeling the Bushistas might dry and use this against him. (i.e., no original ideas, a kleptomaniac with words, etc.)

1. Carville did admit on Crossfire that he gave the line to Dean and he used it.

I'll post again tomorrow or the next day when they have last Wednesday's The Note in the archive. But they said the campaign insisted it was his line and The Note editorialized that they certianly hope it doesn't come out that it was someone elses line.

BTW in the future if you post a sentence from a piece that is literally pages long could you please give some idea of where in the piece it was? I had to scan the piece twice to find it and had you given the header above it I wouldn't have had to do that. Thanks.

10. Why do you say that the Dean campaign said that?
Edited on Sun Sep-14-03 10:41 PM by babzilla
No one in Dean's campaign ever said that he wrote that line.

If you watched the show you must know that he was being prepped for the debate by Carville & Begala and that they gave him that line. He thought it was a good line and used it. End of story.

Here are the statements on the Dean blog from Begala & Carville:

Begala and Carville: Dean on K Street
Hey, bloggers. This is Paul Begala and James Carville (Paul's on the keyboard, James is on the phone. He's not the most computer literate guy in the world.)

We just wanted to let you know about K Street - a new series debuting on HBO Sunday night at 10:35 eastern. This isn't a commercial, though. We wanted to let you know that your man, Howard Dean, is our featured guest star.

The show, like Gov. Dean, is completely unscripted. Not to give the plot away, but James plays a political consultant/lobbyist who volunteers to prepare Gov. Dean for the Congressional Black Caucus debate. This thoroughly pisses-off his Republican wife, Mary Matalin. So he recruits Paul to help out.

In a gutsy and unconventional move, Gov. Dean agreed not only to appear on the program (as do various Republican Senators) but also to let James and Paul do debate prep with him - as Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney and others filmed it. The prep was real - we did it on Monday in anticipation of the CBC debate on Tuesday. We offered him our best and most honest advice. Like any smart person, he took some of it, rejected some of it, and modified some of it.

Because of our "Crossfire" gig, we can't play favorites. We've given advice to every major presidential candidate. But if you like Dean, you'll like him on K Street. He was very funny - did an impression of James that is spot-on. He was also very real. He forgot about the cameras (they're small and the camera operators are very unobtrusive) and the result is an authentic behind-the-scenes look at Gov. Dean preparing for the debate. We offered the governor a few lines, just as we always did for President Clinton. He used one of them - and we hope he uses them all as the campaign progresses.

Again, while we can't and won't endorse anyone in the primaries, both of us were impressed with Gov. Dean and his campaign. They took a big chance, and we think it pays off. Millions of people who never watch "Crossfire" or "Meet the Press" will see Gov. Dean on HBO Sunday night. They'll see an unvarnished, unscripted, plain-speaking guy who really wants to take the fight to President Bush. In a world in which too many politicians are seen as phonies, Gov. Dean comes across as the real thing. What you see is what you get.

We had fun, and hope Gov. Dean did. K Street is groundbreaking television--part fiction, part reality show, part documentary. We hope you like the show. We know you'll like how your candidate did.

14. Uh, K Street is fictionalized...
Clooney's described the program as being put together the week it's shown (as in the week SINCE the debate on the 7th), in response to current political events. So they heard the line, thought it sounded like something prepared, and reverse engineered the story (such as it was) to fit.

Overall, the show was pretty dreadful, except it was kind of cool to see Dean doing his Carville impersonation telling a joke.

More likely repugs will target Dean for appearing in this fiction show as himself, saying he's not taking the campaign seriously or whatever... no, wait, it will demonstrate that Dean's in cahoots with all those Hollywood Commie Libs like Clooney.

34. Hey, man....
I am another Dean skeptic, so I understand a little bit about where your posts come from. But this kind of posting, especially when it is erroneous, begins to dilute the REAL problems that we have with Dean.

I can't find any where, here or any where else, where Dean said that he came up with that line on his own. If he said that on "This Week", I can't find where he said it. All of the debaters, including Kerry, get help prepping for the debates. All of the candidates have people who help them come up with snappy one liners that will be remembered by voters.

Dean will do something else that you can write a legit post on, that's a given. Just let this other stuff float on by, cause it lessens the impact when something real does happen.
