Dean plans to storm Kerry Turf
Howard Dean is taking his surging presidential campaign to rival John F. Kerry's doorstep, planning to rally backers and raise cash just two miles from the Bay State senator's Beacon Hill home...Posing an even greater threat of embarrassing Kerry is a Dean rally planned for Boston's Copley Square Tuesday...the Dean campaigns hopes to draw 3,000 supporters to the lunchtime rally..."

Actually given the level of support at Meetups in Massachusetts, I bet that Dean can attract more than 3,000 in Boston.

5. Let me explain to you
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 11:48 AM by Fabio
The headline is "Dean plans to storm Kerry Turf" So here's my horrible logic:

a) Copley Square is outdoors.
b) His events are planned for thursday.
c) Isabel is expected to land in the NE on thursday.
d) I was making a pun out of the headline and the fact that a namedstorm was gonna be in the vicinity. Hmmm.

For evidence see the below links.

Still, it doesn't look like it will be too bad. Just windy.

Anyhow, thanks for your pithiness.

Your logic was not horrible. Your research and inability to read the article were. Laughably so.

The rally is on Tuesday, not Thursday.

For evidence, see the link in the original post in this thread. We'll await an apology.

You don't need tags for images on DU. Just post the URL for the image and DU adds the tags. DU transforms anything with .jpg, .gif, .png, etc. into an image that shows up on the board. :)

10. it's all about delegates
Dean doesn't expect to beat Kerry in his homestate he only wants to come in a solid second and get some delegates. It is like Missouri, Gep's homestate where Gep has a 36-22 lead in a poll released last week over Dean--If Dean keeps it up and can get 25% of the vote in a rivals homestate he will get a good chunk of delegates.

I think it is a good move to run everywhere.

33. Why would it? The press ignores most of what
Kerry says and does. Don't you know that Dean has been sold to the Americamn public as the ONLY candidate who speaks out against Bush? As the ONLY antiwar candidate? As the ONLY one representing the "Democratic wing of the Democratic party" ?

The ride of publicity given Dean by the corporate media fueled that perception with the public.

I don't think that the Republicans and their media lackeys really want a Democrat to shatter fundraising records, do you? Especially from ordinary citizens. How is Dean's very impressive success so far anything except scary to the evil powers-that-be?

Try not to slip from a persecution complex directly into paranoia - I think there is still hope for you yet, but not everything good that happens to Dean comes from a conspiracy - just most of it ;)

The others didn't start bashing Bush until Dean did and they saw the results. So now Dean carries the mantle and the others will have to find some other way to stand out. They're smart men. They'll think of something.

Hear the message from the man himself instead of second-hand. Hear the message in context instead of edited to suit a particular agenda.

48. Heard the man several times in person
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 01:27 PM by Nicholas_J
Was unimpressed.

Checked his records. they do not connect with his campaign talk...

Finally, have heard him lie, a number of times, and do so in front of millions on national TV (remember the Social Security thing, he said that he NEVER claimed he would raise the retirement age, then got caught, apologized for his position, but avoided the reqal issue, that he lied about having said ot not said it)

There is a term for people who persuade through speaking:

Demagogue:

an orator who appeals to the passions and prejudices of his audience

Synonyms: demagog, rabble-rouser

See Also: orator, public speaker, rhetorician, speechifier, speechmaker

There are others who will verify this about Dean, in the written media:

I know that a lot of you are going to vote for Dean -- he talks a good game; he can be charismatic and charming. But I'm warning you. This man will tell you what you want to hear, or at least tell you something that has some little kernel of something that you can interpret as support for the things that are important to you. But when the time comes to stand up and lead on the issue, to take on the money interests and backsliders in his own party, that stiff little spine will turn into a slinky.

http://www.counterpunch.org/jacobs08292003.html

ALSO

Indeed, as Norman Solomon observes, there's a real disconnect between Dean's media image and his record.

"But the Democratic Leadership Council need not despair. Most of the nation's political journalists, including pro-Democrat pundits, insist that the party should not nominate someone too far 'left' -- which usually means anybody who's appreciably more progressive than the DLC. That bias helps to account for the frequent mislabeling of Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor who has risen to the top tier of contenders for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.
After Dean officially announced his campaign on June 23, some news stories identified him with the left. It's a case of mistaken identity. 'He's really a classic Rockefeller Republican -- a fiscal conservative and social liberal,' according to University of Vermont political scientist Garrison Nelson."

http://www.motherjones.com/news/dailymojo/2003/27/we_473_02.html#one

Perhaps the REAL problem democrats have had in capturing and holding the White House lies not in the message that the party has to offer, but the fact that there is a tendency to make this kind of statement "Go listen to him talk" without making the effort to actually look at what the candidates "DOES" and has done.

Then arguing and making all sorts of excuses for the nominees gaffs, errors, and failure to leep campaign promises.

Perhaps it would be better to select someone who actually has a RECORD of standing behing the Democratic Party, who does not attack its leaders, who supports the legislation put forth by his own party when they put it forth(Dean has the highest rtecord of Vetoing DEMOCRATIC sponsored legislation of ANY governor, Republican or DEMOCRAT in Vermont history).

THatts what Republicans do. They look for a candidate who has actively band consistantly supported the legislation THEY wanted passed. Someone loyal to the party's ideals and platforms.

This is the real reason Bush took the White House and why the point that he stole the 2000 elections could not be moved in the public eye.

Republicans look for consistancy in the support of conservatism.

Democrats do not look for consistancy in the support of liberalism and democratic party ideals.

We look for fire in the belly, never realizing that a good actor can stir emothions, without ever supporting, or even planning to support the things that he speaks about represent his own ideals at all. Or perhaps theh only represent one ideal. That persons ambition to get into office at any cost, telling any lie, doing anything.

Dean is style...

But no substance...

And this, more than anything else, is the real differnce between Republicans and Democrats.
