Dean's Very Early Bat Results: $20K in One Hour
The bat is back, and Howard Dean`s official campaign blog reports a single blistering $20,000 hour so far on this sleepy Sunday morning.

Sunday's 1 PM Eastern Time total is $173,521.02 from 2,707 individual contributors, putting a serious down payment on the jaw dropping $5 million goal. That's an average contribution of $64.10. The bat came back just a few hours ago.

Dean for America will call a random contributor with each $100,000 raised to send them an autographed bat and to get their comments for the blog about America's future.

Full disclosure: I was one of those early Sunday morning people. And, darn it, I'm excited!

3. Some More Math...
- Dean will need to raise an average of over $20,880 per hour over the course of the 10 day campaign (240 hours, day and night) to make his $5 million goal.

- So far, the average over the first 13 hours is $13,347.77 per hour.

- There have been an average of 208 contributors per hour so far, or about one person every 17 seconds.

- The campaign will report the other 3rd quarter funds already raised later during this 10 day campaign, so contributors will know the overall total as they approach the finish line.

- If Dean makes his goal, there will be 50 autographed bat winners, one for each state in the Union.

- President Bush set a total election cycle goal of $270 million and is well on his way to raising that money, mostly from fat-cat "Pioneers" and "Rangers" who bundle multiple $4,000 maximum contributions ($2,000 for Bush's uncontested primary, $2,000 for the general election, per person) from their rich friends. The Bush campaign tracks these contributions by using code numbers, so they know exactly who their big-business friends are and how much they produce. It's a good deal if you're a taxpayer-supported corporation, though. With up to $87 Billion in new no-bid government contracts, what's a couple hundred thousand bucks in campaign contributions?

- The $270 million excludes independent "issue" expenditures, which McCain-Feingold curtailed but could not eliminate. Democrats actually lost more dollars under McCain-Feingold than Republicans.

12. Re: the average per hour
It doesn't include mail-in donations yet. Most of the contributions will be online, but there will be money coming in the mail that hasn't been counted yet.

4. Now 14 Hours into the 3rd Quarter Bat
In the 14th hour, Dean raised $25,736.54, for a grand total so far of $199,257.56. That's an average of $14,232.68 per hour so far, working toward that $20,880 per hour average that Dean must maintain to get to $5 million.

There were 462 contributors this last hour -- more than one person every 8 seconds!

The second autographed bat was awarded just after 2 PM Eastern Time Sunday. Forty-eight more to go.

Dean is 3.99 percent of the way toward his goal at this point.

Ain't numbers fun? :-)

5. More 14th Hour Math
- Average contribution so far, overall, is $62.88. That's down very slightly from the average an hour ago.

- Only about 3/4 of one percent of Dean's registered supporters have checked in so far for this fundraising campaign. There are still 99.23% of his supporters still out there.

- Dean will now need to average $21,242.22 every hour, day and night, for the rest of the fundraising drive to make his $5 million goal.

With the linkup to the Dean for America bat system? That's pretty cool. I might want to do that at Pilots for Dean.

Learn something new every day! And you also made me stumble again into the Dean Official Campaign Blog to see Pilots for Dean now listed under "Unofficial Dean Sites." Guess we've made it to the big time. :-)

I love how this campaign is so grassroots-y.

That's Joe Trippi calling one of the 'winners' of a bat signed by Gov. Dean.

14. Hmmm... Not Sure I Like Gephardt's Idea
Dick Gephardt`s official site has a pop-up window now -- turn off any pop-up blockers you have to see it -- which says, "Howard Dean Thinks He's the Only One Who Can Raise Money Online..." And so on.

Hmmmm...
