Marist Poll: Lieberman still leads in New York, Dean Second

A new Marist poll released today and conducted last week indicates that while Joe Lieberman's numbers are declining nationally he is still in fairly good shape in New York.

Here are the results:
Lieberman 23% (up from 21% in April)
Dean 13% (up from 4% in April)
Sharpton 10% (no change since April)
Gephardt 8% (no change since April)
Kerry 8% (down from 10% in April)
Clark 6%
Edwards 3% (up from 2% in April)
Braun 3% (up from 2% in April)
Graham 2% (up from 1%)
Kucinich 1% (no change)
Undecided: 23% (down from 35% in April)

Good news for Lieberman in that while he is showing weakness elsewhere he has actually gained two-points in NY since April and Dean who went from fifth place to a solid second more than trippling his support since April.

28% of New York Dems rate the job Bush is doing as excellent/good while 47% rate it as poor and 25% as fair. On both extremes those who rate Bush as "excellent" is only 8% while those who rate him as "poor" is a whooping 47%.

1. Wow, can't wait until the national polls look like that for Bush

That's amazing. Obviously, we can see what the home of 9/11 thinks of Bush now. Now, the rest of the country needs to come along for the ride down the poll slide.

2. Since I don't know anyone personally

who supports Lieberman, I'm rather amazed that he's in the lead in New York. I suspect what we're seeing there is a pronounced Jewish vote, and no, I'm not being anti-Semitic. Jews tend to be voters, and they understandably are going to tend to support a fellow Jew. Nothing wrong with that.

But I think as the primary season progresses, Lieberman will fall off the radar, even in New York.

4. That is what you would think

and it is probably true that the Jewish vote is a big factor in why Lieberman is leading in New York. But what is strange is that a lot of Jews I know, especially the ones who are single-issue voters on Israel, do not want Lieberman to become president, because they know that he would have to go out of his way to distance himself from Sharon and to show the world that he can be an honest broker.

3. This is good and bad news for Dean

The good news is that he is up significantly from last time. The bad news is he still trails Lieberman by ten points. I have been worrying about the NY primary, in part because I read a few months ago that the state has such a high threshold for getting on the ballot that Dean might not even be on it (does anyone know if that is still a concern?) and also because of this whole ridiculous controversy over his comments about Israel. I am worred because I have had people come up to me and say things like "do you know Dean wants to cut off aid to Israel? (completely false, unfortunately for some of you) and "how can you support Dean? He's anti-Israel?" (also not true at all). But these things stick, and I am working hard to clear up misperceptions but I am worried that he has already left a bad impression with a lot of Jews, and the Jewish vote is critical in New York's primary.

P.S. PLEASE do not turn this into a flame war over the Middle East or Dean's Israel position.

6. You Can Tell Them That Dean is More Pro-Likud Than Pro-Israel

It is a shame that people don't recognize what a good friend Sharon has in Dean. I think New Yorkers would appreciate his considerable overtures to the current leaders of Israel in their war against the Hamas homicide-bomber soldiers.

7. By the time NY comes around chances are Lieberman will be out

I doubt he will do much in Iowa, NH, or SC and I think his support in an important state like NY will stall or decline--obviously if he gets out of the race. I think of NY as a strong Dean possiblity. We will need as many of its delegates as possible. Also encouraging for Dean is that this poll was done during the height of the Clark mania last week and while Clark went to the top in national polls he only gets 6% and sixth place in this poll.

8. Delegate selection rules are important re: NY

The 15% at-large threshold is only attained by Lieberman, but Dean is within striking distance.

However, district-level delegates will likely be split between all candidates. Here regional strengh is crucial...a pity this poll didn't give breakdowns.

Any democrat who's seen just one of Joe's debate performances wouldn't side with that DINO.
