Dean beats Bush

sort of . . .

FROM: http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/Main.asp?SectionID=30&SubSectionID=86&ArticleID=84975
Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean won the battle for New Hampshire bucks during the most recent quarter of campaign fund-raising.

Dean shocked the political class by raising $7.5 million in the April-June quarter, but he also found a way to out-raise everyone in New Hampshire-based checks, even President Bush.

Here’s the rundown of itemized donations ($200 or more) to Bush and the nine Democrats in the race:

- Dean: $66,985

- Bush: $56,600

- John Kerry: $27,550

- John Edwards: $16,000

- Joe Lieberman: $15,610

- Dick Gephardt: $12,200

- Dennis Kucinich: $4,500

- Bob Graham: $750

- Carol Mosely Braun: $0

- Al Sharpton: $0

Dorie Clark, Dean’s New Hampshire communications director, said when the smaller checks are added to the pile, Dean pulled in $103,461 from the state, which has a well-earned reputation for being cheap with campaign dollars.

1. Um...Bush made more this weekend than Dean's 2nd quarter
And Bush doesn't even have to bother with spending on the primary. I understand that you want to present Dean in the best light, but this seems a little desperate. Stick to the battle of ideas.

3. hey Doc...
I understand that you like to piss on anything positive about Dean... But could you lighten up a little? I think this was posted with a wink and a nod to the fact that Bush is crushing everyone in fundraising. I got it, but then again I don't chase Dean threads and bash him in my spare time.

4. I know it's weird...

how some people chase threads just to bash the candidate rather than promote their own candidate, but don't get too down on the Doc ok. I actually read something that the Doc posted today that was almost pro-Dean.

I did post this as a wink and a nod, but my point was that Dean not only beat Bush in NH fundraising, but all the other dem candidates too. And also came close to beating all their numbers combined (minus Bush). That's what really interested me about this article and the numbers...

7. I can appreciate it on both levels...
And was glad you tracked it down. Any good news like this (from any angle) is welcome.

2. Hey, I have NEVER contributed to any campaign.
But I believe in Dean and have contributed $25 increments about 3-4 times. It's the best I can do, but this guy is a winner.

5. You should feel good about Dean being your first --
it means you choose wisely. Don't feel bad about the $ amount, every little bit helps. And you are 100% correct, he is a winner! He'll beat Bush like a bad piece of meat if the Dems are smart enough to make him their candidate!

Bush may have more money behind him, but Dean will have what counts-- the grassroots support of the people, a very good record of public service from his 11 years as Vermont's governor, the trust of the people and enough passion and personal commitment to carry him all the way.

Go Dean, Go!!!

8. Also, it's something Trippi is tapping...
...but individual donors, in large numbers, giving small amounts, repeatedly, over the course of the campaign, will really make a difference in the way democracy plays out...

9. Dean and cash
Dean really has a lot of ground to make up here. If he can't raise the big bucks, Kerry, Edwards and Gephardt will crush him over a long campaign. See Mondale vs. Hart.

10. "a lot of ground"? Seems to me Dean's catching up nicely...
Q2 launched him right into the top tier, only a couple of million behind the front-runners. It's WAY to early to start predicting fundraising trends, but of the top candidates, Dean was the only one to increase contributions in Q2. Dean's campaign has the additional benefits of having more individual donors than any other campaingn and having fewer of those donors at the maximum contribution level.

I agree that he'll have to keep it up to win the nomination, but that doesn't seem to be a problem at this point. I really don't feel tht he "has a lot of ground to make up".

11. Matching Funds will be the key to Dean overpowering the other Dems
and quite possibly Bush. See blog Howard Dean 2004 at http://dean2004.blogspot.com/ and find the title 2nd Quarter Fundraising Info

The Balz-Edsall (Washington Post) story has this to say about Dean and matching funds: "The Dean campaign said it received contributions from 73,226 individuals in the second quarter, and it estimated that more than 60 percent of the total it has raised this year qualifies for federal matching grants under the public financing program that provides taxpayer money equaling the contributions of $250 or less from individuals."

"The matching rate for Dean is much higher than the normal level which, according to the FEC, is usually in the 25 percent to 33 percent range. That will give Dean a built-in cushion in January, when the federal funds are dispersed, even if the other candidates outraise him in the next six months."

There's an intentional strategy to court small donors to Dean's campaign and it has to do with FEC matching rules.
