Zogby: Dean expands national lead; Clark slips
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 12:21 PM by pruner
Dean Expands National Lead of Democratic Presidential Hopefuls; Clark Slips; One in Three Voters Still Unsure, According to New Zogby International Poll

Former Vermont Governor Dr. Howard Dean has expanded his lead over the field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, moving away from a late September tie with retired General Wesley Clark.  Dean now receives 15% from 558 likely Democratic primary voters nationwide, and Clark has slipped slightly to 10%.

Polling was conducted from Zogby International’s Call Center in Utica, November 3 – 5.  The margin of survey error is +/- 4.2 percentage points.  Error margins are higher in sub-groups.

Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt and Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman are tied for third at 9%, slight improvements over September polling.  Massachusetts Senator John Kerry remains at 7%, followed by civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton (4%), and North Carolina Senator John Edwards (3%).  Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and former Illinois Senator Carol Mosley Braun are tied with 2% each.

One in three (34%) Democratic primary voters remain undecided on a candidate, down slightly from September undecideds of 43%.

4. The confederate flag
issue is just nonsense, and this poves it. The more Dean's opponents attack, the more foolish they look. Clark's silence is deafening. To me it's clear that Clark and Dean will be 1 and 2, one way or the other. ... I agree with what Dean said in context. Most people who like him would have phrased it only slightly differently. He's already said it two times in public and no one criticized him. Now he's the leader. The Party is either with him to win, or against him to lose and give * four more years. It's that simple. 2004 will be the true test of the Democratic Party as a viable organization.

5. Confirms Marist Polling Data
The spread between Dean and Clark widened in the latest Marist College Poll, and there was some thinking it was a fluke. Zogby is starting to back that up.

But long way to go, folks, and national polls don't mean much. We don't have a national Democratic primary.
