Senator Katherine Harris?
I just got email from the DSCC. It's a scary thought.

Katherine Harris is back in the news talking about a run for the United States Senate.

The very idea is outrageous.

Democrats have not forgotten Harris' actions during the Florida debacle of Election 2000. Back then she was in charge of the state's election process as Florida's Secretary of State. She was also co-chair of the Bush/Cheney Florida campaign team.

That much was obvious.

Charged with the responsibility of carrying out the process of democracy, Katherine Harris instead acted with partisan fervor. Katherine Harris solely acted in the best interests of the Bush campaign.

The Bush campaign's strategy: Do what you must – no, do anything – to stop counting the votes of Florida citizens. Katherine Harris helped them every step of the way by applying the law selectively and arbitrarily to achieve the Bush team's goals. In the end, she certified Florida's election results with a 537-vote margin of victory for George W. Bush.

She was rewarded with a Congressional seat, in a Republican district specifically re-drawn to ensure her election. She kicked off that congressional campaign with Tom Delay at her side.

I think Katherine Harris has done enough to subvert the democratic process – I don't want to see her run for Senate in Florida. But if she does, defeating her will be our number one priority.

If you agree, make your voice heard, support the DSCC. We must Take Back the Senate in 2004!

We cannot let Katherine Harris think that because she handed the state of Florida to President Bush she is qualified to be a United States Senator!

The DSCC depends on committed supporters like you to maintain the funds to help elect Democrats around the country. To support the DSCC with a contribution, click here: https://contribute.dscc.org/rt or mail your contribution to the DSCC at 120 Maryland Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002.

(I hope it's okay to post the whole message. I have no actual link.)

3. No chance
While I agree that defeating K.Harris should be a priority and I believe can be accomplished there is virtually NO HOPE the Dems will take back the Senate.

We are losing Senators in Southern States (Ga, SoC, Fla, NC and possibly Louisiana)…The only hope we have of gaining back the Senate is winning other contested seats in Illinois (probably) or some place like Alaska (maybe) or PA (not likely) WHILE ALSO 4 of those 5 Seats…Aint gonna happen.

Right now a Democratic President in 2004 is looking at 52, 53 or maybe even 54 Repuke Senators and a house still solidly in Republican hands.

Sad to say…if Bush wins, we are so screwed because he will have an even more willing right-wing Congress to work with.

5. Sure, there's a chance...
If the right candidates are fielded to run...it's obvious that Cruella thinks she can win a Senate seat...which, after 2000, I don't see as very likely. BUT the best person needs to be chosen to run against her, if she jumps in. Same in the other states, and Erskine Bowles should have a better time of it here than in 2002, running a 60-day campaign against a celebrity like Liddy Dole (who has subsequently angered a lot of people for her "do-nothing" presence, btw).

B-)

6. I admire your hope
But it is this type of hope that will have DU on meltdown next Nov 4 when all these dreams don’t come to fruition.

Not only are the Dems scattered all over the place (see the Zell Miller idiocy), but the Repukes are mobilized behind a single minded agenda of hatred for Democrats and the only way to root us out is to gain power in government. They also have enormous wealth at their disposal as Chimp will spend close to 200 Million dollars next year.

THIS DOESN’T even take into account our seemingly and ever increasing corrupt elections.

I am maintaining a passive view so as to not get my hopes up. I hope to elect a Democratic President and that is my only thing. Taking back the Senate? Not even on my radar screen at this time.

10. I wouldn't write off the entire South
Georgia looks likely to be gone (but Illinois will offset that, since that is a near lock for a pickup).

However, South Carolina and North Carolina could go either way, and Florida and Louisiana will both be leaning in our direction. Further more, if you look at the Philadelphia landslide and other races across Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter will be VERY vulnerable come 2004. Also, all polls indicate that Tony Knowles will be able to defeat Lisa Murkowski in 2004 (I know it's early out, but it means something when this far out an incumbent is already losing). Throw in a come from behind victory (which always seems to occur at least once in an election), and the Democrats look fairly good in 2004.

14. nmdem

Come on my friend. There is just too much optimism here for me to see straight. :bounce:

I can't imagine winning South Car. North Car? Yea, maybe so, but it will take a brilliant candidate, money, a middling to weak repuke candidate and a solid GOTV drive.

Mind you ... none of this matters if Bush ends the war sometime next summer and ties in the Republican Convention amidst "welcome home to the troops" rallies.

16. I wouldn't call Jim DeMint a good candidate
He's an AWFUL speaker, has the personality of a stick of gum, and will be bruised by a primary.

In opposition, Inez Tenenbaum is a terrific speaker, is liked by even her opponents, is an amiable, popular candidate, and will have clear sailing for the nomination.

13. Peter Deutsch, Betty Castor, and Alex Penelas
And who does the GOP have? Katherine Harris, who was so scared she'd lose statewide in 2002 that she ran for a highly Republican House seat and needed national money to even win there, and Bill McCollum, the defeated candidate for the Senate in 2000.

8. the BFEE Corporation offers rapid promotion
she couldn't even 'Secretary of State' (said as a verb), and already knocking on the Senate's door ... wow, what an "associate" ...

hey, she's got foreign policy experience ... she toured South America with Jeb ... she recently toured Baghdad feeling like a sitting duck in traffic; and she flies to Paris for her coiffure ... and, agriculture ... she inherited all that orange grove money ...

being awarded entrance into the Council of Foreign Relations after 12/12/2000 was just a stepping stone

more things float than Ivory soap bars
