LA: Poll: Jindal edges Blanco
Racial, regional differences emerge.
John Hill
TalktoJHill@aol.com

November 8, 2003

BATON ROUGE — Republican Bobby Jindal, leading Democrat Kathleen Blanco by five points, was nearing the 50 percent majority with likely voters, according to a Daily Advertiser/Louisiana Gannett poll taken this week.

Forty-eight percent favored Jindal, and 43 percent Blanco.

“It looks like it is his race to lose, but that doesn’t mean he has it nailed down,” said pollster Brad Coker. “From the time the poll was finished, there were nine days left, a long time in a hotly contested race.”

Louisiana’s Gannett papers — the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, The News-Star of Monroe, the Opelousas Daily World and The Times of Shreveport - paid for the poll, which has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

5. The mudslinging has begun.
Anti-Jindal ads are being aired. Of course, the Blanco campaign has nothing to do with it.

3. WTFever.....amazing that so many minorities are endorsing his puke ass....
.....so I guess it'll be a toss up...Blanco isn't a true Democrat either....she refused to endorse Mary Landrieu last fall...and I loathe her for that...she's weak to say the least yet I'll vote for her over Jindal without question...but dunno what to say or think about the idiot fucktards in this state who're voting for him...who claim to be Democrats....it's disgustingly sickening all the way around! :puke:

4. What was her problem with Landriu...
was it that Landrieu is not pro-choice...or not right-wing enough for Blanco???

And one thing about Jindal and his attempts to win minority votes. On a Presidential election year this might be an effective strategy. But on a year like this...it would likely backfire!

Usually turnout is lowest among minorities during off-year elections. This factor typically would be a disadvantage to Democrats, but this year it could help Blanco. In the post 9/11 atmosphere, I'm not convinced many GOP voters in Lousiana will respond favorably to Jindal. But I am sure that Blanco has more solid support among women in Lousiana than Jindal has among men.

I also feel certain that Blanco has more support due to her name recognition as Lt. Governor, and while Jindal is gaining name recognition, undecided voters who see his unique name for the first time..will likely choose Blanco over him.

7. This is a surprise...
Blanco and Jindal have equal ratios of support with the opposing genders.

One could view this as a boy vs. woman race for Governor. 54% of Women prefer Blanco to Jindhal..56% of boys prefer Jindal over Blanco, when considering the margin of error these numbers are essentially the same. Are most of these bos and women making gender the basis for how they vote? I must admit, when voting in the primaries I will more often support the woman before the man...but then in the general election, partisanship is the most important factor in who wins my vote.

When looking at the 40% of bos who prefer Blanco and essentially the same level of support, 39% of women who support Jindhal..partisonship is the central factor in determining these people's votes.

Finally...when answering the questions, how many married women may say they plan to Jindhal when they really plan to vote for Blanco? How many married men gave the same kinda answer to these pollsters? Lying to a pollster may sound stupid, but many people do lie about how they vote. Marriage is beautiful partnership for those who have patience and lots of love. But it also takes pleasing the woman or man you love, and knowing that you will have to spend your entire life with this person if it is going to work. This is why accurate polling and gender driven politics are not always in conjunction.

8. big difference is that Blanco is not Mary L
and Jingl is not Suzie Terrell. Jingl by most accounts is well spoken and makes a good impression. Blanco, I'm almost sure of this, is being hurt because she is not pro-choice where Mary L. ran strongly against Terrell in'02 on being for choice and really had alot of support from womens groups and voters.

9. Jindal
is flooding the airwaves with attack ads accusing Blanco of flooding the airwaves with attack ads.

Blanco is attacking Jindal's horrible record as DHH secretary in the 1990s. The ads might be a wee bit exaggerated, but from what I remember they are not far off the mark. Jindal's cuts to the DHH really hurt the poor, elderly, disabled, and the very young in this state.

One problem is, I don't think Blanco has as much money to spend as Jindal does, and her ads are not aired nearly as often as his. Hopefully she will crank it up as the home stretch approaches.

It doesn't look good for Blanco right now, but I am not ready to give up on her yet. If she can get out the vote on election day, she can win. Otherwise, we're going to be in for a loooooooooooong 4 years.

10. Last I heard is that Blanco was holding back until the last...
minute! I hope this is correct. She currently has more money than Jindal in the bank and can afford to put out more commercials.

11. That would be good news
I hope it's true. If she's been sandbagging on the money, she'll be able to afford to really BLITZ the airwaves during the final days of the campaign. Landrieu used that tactic last December and that, along with a VERY aggressive GOTV effort on election day, seemed to do the trick for her. Let's hope it works for Blanco, too.
