Gov. Gray Davis seemed to take one step forward and another back as he continued to fight for his political life, securing a state budget that avoids angering voters with a tax increase on the same day a coalition of Democrats that had united in opposition to his recall began to show signs of cracking.
The fissures in the unilateral party support became evident Tuesday when two California congressional Democrats called on Sen. Dianne Feinstein to place her name on the recall ballot. Until now, Democrats have been united in saying they won't run to replace Davis if he is ousted by the Republican-backed recall.
"It is no secret that Gov. Davis is in trouble, and I seriously doubt that he can survive the recall effort," Rep. Cal Dooley, a moderate from Hartford, said in a statement issued Tuesday. He suggested that Feinstein, widely touted as the state's most popular Democrat, put her name on the ballot as a candidate to replace Davis if the recall succeeds.
Rep. Loretta Sanchez, a liberal from Garden Grove, agreed.
