3. Lou cut Dennis off when Dennis said illegal Immigrants are NOT

depressing wages (that's a favorite theme of Lou's lately.) "Thanks for being with us, Congressman."

4. Low blow by Dobbs on that last question.
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 11:56 PM by MercutioATC
He asks a leading question and doesn't give Kucinich time to answer. Then he has the balls to say "Well, we're out of time, so we'll let you have the last word."

Really bad form.

5. And, in fact, he didn't let Kucinich have the last word, unless

you want to count "Thanks, Lou" or "Goodnight, Lou" -- whatever Dennis said after Lou cut him off in mid-sentence and announced they were out of time. He didn't give him time for a final statement, as would have been courteous.

Lou only has an entire show every night to express his views. . . you'd think he might give people with opposing views a bit more time since he has ample time to tear them down and refute their views if he chooses.

6. Of course, DK is wrong about the immigration-wage issue
And Lou is right about illegal immigration lowering wages. Not only are there very good studies (see google) showing this effect, but plain old common sense and the law of supply and demand tells you that a million dirt farmers coming across the border every year are going to lower the wages of blue collar americans. They come from a region where little work can be found, and if available, they can make a dollar an hour maybe, and here they can compete for jobs that start at around $6/hr or better. How are they NOT going to lower wages??!!

Maybe Dobbs was trying to help Dennis by cutting him off. You see, I have been following the immmigration issue (and Dobbs) for some time. Dobbs is in some ways very similar to Dennis--they are both populists who fight for the common working man. But Dobbs is standing up for American citizens, whereas DK is standing up for Americans AND latin american illegals. Umm....Dennis, the President of the United States of America is not supposed to put the interests of foreigners before the interests of Americans. THat should be a given....

Still, I support Dennis before any other candidate. Heck, I cannot think of any other GOP or Dem candidate who can get my vote in the general election. He is our best choice by far.

In fact, he is the only progressive populist out there. I just wish he were more of a progressive populist....

DK and his advisors (and all the other Democrat candidates) may think that he will get more Hispanic votes for supporting the illegals, but many polls have shown that about as many Latinos (or more) want less illegal immigration. And white and black Americans want less immigration (especially illegal) in an overwhelming majority.

If DK wants to set himself apart from the other candidates (and better represent Americans) he should speak out against illegal immigration. Mexico is a wealthy nation--let them start taking care of their own!

I challenge Dennis or his advisors to debate me here on this forum on the illegal immigration issue.

7. Thjis is an issue I'm not comfortable with...
I'd like to see equal opportunity for all Americans, but how do we define "Americans"? As long as we have that "give me your huddled masses" plaque on the Statue of Liberty, aren't we kinda philosophically bound to accept anybody who wants to come here?

At the same time, I believe that we experience an incredible economic loss due to illegal residents 1) depressing wages in certain manual labor segments of the economy 2) recieving free public schooling and 3) recieving unreimbursed healthcare services from emergency departments.

I think that the proposed amnesty programs and "benefits for illegal resident" programs are counter-productive in that they just defer the problem. I'd like to see a proposal for a real solution instead of these short-term "I'm a compassionate supporter of Latinos" plans designed to appeal Latino voters.
