Janklow support erodes
US Rep. Bill Janklow (R-SD) standing with voters continues to slide as his leagal difficulites from a fatal traffic accident drag on.

*29% of those polled said they now have a favorable impression of Janklow, compared to 37% following the accident and more than 50% before last years election.

* 38% said he should resign immediately from congress, compared with only 23% in August.

* 64% said he should resign if found guilty of felony manslaughter compared to 50% in the previous poll.

* Only 7% think he should run for re-election.

Janklow is finished. This could be a prime democratic pick up seat in 2004 or sooner.

2. I hope you're right, CMT
but Janklow has yet to actually pay for any one of his crimes. He never paid the price for being a rapist - and how interesting that the victim (and her mother) were both murdered. Janklow has friends in very high places.

5. Stephanie Herseth
Going to see Stephanie Herseth tonight at our local Democratic Party function. They moved it from a small lunch room to a larger restaurant because she is coming. She certainly energizes our base.

I don't know if she has announced or not...Its amazing how fast 2 years goes by...

8. good she would be our strongest candidate
given how close she came to Janklow in '02--and he was the sitting Governor in a GOP state.

7. Justice for Janklow
He's sped through that same stop sign numerous times before-- others are finally not afraid to confront him on this, now that he's killed somebody.

I think this time he's going down. He may be feared/respected in S.D., but this accident has shown that he's still human and vulnerable to justice.

9. Thune will run for this seat if he's smart
Faced with the choice of a bruising race against Daschle, in which he would start out at best as an even favorite, and a race for this open seat, Thune would be better off picking the latter. He would win it back easily and then run against Johnson again in '08.

10. Thune probably won't run for senate
This is a paragraph from an somewhat unrelated story from The Hill. I guess they have been told that Thune probably won't run for senate. However, it makes no mention of the House race.

http://www.thehill.com/news/111903/reid.aspx

With former Rep. John Thune (R-S.D.), who lost to Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) last year, apparently deciding not to challenge Daschle, both he and Reid are expected to win reelection. Reid got a break when Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-Nev.) decided not to challenge him.

11. He will probably run for his old seat
and then gear up to run against Johnson in 2008.
