Cummings expected to support Dean |
|
WASHINGTON - Howard Dean is expected soon to announce that he has won the support of Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Baltimore, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, a nod that could help the former Vermont governor gain traction with African-American voters in his pursuit of the Democratic presidential nomination.
Cummings' backing might also help Dean repair any damage over his recent comments invoking the Confederate flag.
With a formal endorsement likely within days, Cummings praised Dean enthusiastically in an interview this week, calling him "somebody who can energize our base" and "the kind of candidate we need to run for president of the United States."
"I like Howard Dean very much," the Baltimore congressman said. "He's the type of person who speaks truth to power. If Democrats are going to win, we have to have somebody like that to energize our base."More: http://www.sunspot.net/news/nationworld/bal-te.cummings21nov21,0,25644.story?coll=bal-news-nation

Dean is building a powerful coalition of diverse groups within the Dem Party. Al From must be crapping in his drawers.

Gee, wasn't Clark, the Clinton redux, suppose to woo the African American voters away from Dean, thus handicapping the insurgent candidate from "lily white" Vermont? Guess, Dean is way ahead of Clark on campaign tactics, again.

and it will be excellent. This and Sheila Jackson Lee's support will make it a fine week for endorsements.

4. Completely irrelevent but.... |
|
...I always thought Elijah Cummings had a great name. Kudos to his mom on that one.
On a more serious note, if Dean gets the endorsement, it will be incredible news. The support from the leaders in the African-American community tells me that minorities are ready to have the long hard conversation about race in this country...something that I don't neccessarily see white people of either political party being all that comfortable with.
