* A scathing indictment of WTTW-Channel 11's "Chicago Tonight" is expected to be released Monday by a public-television watchdog group. Chicago Media Action conducted a study of topics and guests that appeared on the news and public affairs show over 20 nights in 2003 and 2004.---- Snip ----
http://www.suntimes.com/output/feder/cst-fin-feder161.htmlIn fairness...Chicago Tonight is a well-done program compared to anything else on in this market and I'd say far superior to a majority of public and commercial stations around the country. Overall, the station is one of the most progressive around and is generally straight forward in its coverage of local events. It was Elizabeth Brackett's interview that completely blew Jack Ryan out of the race; and the only only to really focus on him using his kid for his own political aims.
Personally, I've never liked Sirott...smarmy and too yuppie for me.
One thing he does in specific is idol worship on the show. The last half hour is lots of self-indulgent stuff...including his equally smarmy wife (he always marries his co-hosts...LOL), and this Ditka interview was a pure fluff piece. Most the interview as waxing nostalgia about the Bears and very little about either his dropping out of the race (just fluffed it off) or his specific politics.
Give Channel 11 a break...at least they have live, local news programming...or the format for a nightly show. Beats the crap on the other channels where planter warts and sexual dysfunction are top stories.
Cheers!
