Pacifist American rappers top singles chart

American hip-hop crew Black Eyed Peas have knocked Elton John from the top of the singles chart with their pacifist ballad "Where Is The Love?".

The Peas have raised eyebrows in the world of hip-hop by rejecting the common formula of macho gun-toting lyrics in favour of political soul-searching.

The single, featuring vocals by Justin Timberlake, examines mounting world conflict in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

3. LOVE the Black Eyed Peas

This is so awesome and what a huge advance for the hip hop culture that a non-gangsta type of group can be popular among listeners.

4. just catchy maybe

I'd like to think that an increasing political awareness is the reason for the success of the Black Eyed Peas latest single but think it has more to do with the fact that it's catchy and plays on high rotation on MTV and other video clip shows (atleast here in Oz)

When Nirvana became HUGE I don't think it reflected a shift in politics for most of their mainstream fans, likewise I don;t think Eminem's popularity neccesarily means there's been an upsurge in people thinking (albeit not seriously) about offing their girlfriends - but he's very catchy and hard to get out of your head.

I tend not to listen to music with dodgy lyrical content regardless of the music/beat but I think I'm in the minority - my sister once said to me that if Billy Bragg was singing about love and not Thatcher (it was a while back!) I wouldn't have a bar of it and she's right but MOST people like music for the sound not the politics - just my 2 cents tho!
