By Judy Keen, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — On the second anniversary of the day that reshaped his responsibilities, President Bush was touched, as he often is,
by words in the Bible. Bush told aides that he was struck by
the beauty of Psalm 62 when it was read by Harriett Miers, his deputy chief of staff, during a memorial service at St. John's Church near the White House.
... This year, Bush stayed closer to home and kept a lower profile. He began his morning at church. When the service was over, he spoke for just a minute to reporters. "Today our nation remembers," he said. "We remember a sad and terrible day. ... We remember lives lost. We remember the heroic deeds."
Then he returned to the White House to stand on the South Lawn,
head bowed, among senior officials, secretaries, cooks and maintenance workers for a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first jet hit the World Trade Center.
