CHILDREN FIND TV TOO VIOLENT - UK
CHILDREN do not have to actually see violence to find TV shows frightening, a study yesterday revealed.

Researchers called for more warnings on news and drama programmes before the 9pm watershed which contain "brutal and raw" scenes.

Steve Perkins, standards chief of the Independent Television Commission, said: "Where violent storylines come into soaps the producers need to consider the emotional and moral impact beyond what is actually seen."

And the BBC's editorial policy director Stephen Whittle said: "Children have much greater moral imaginations than their parents and a much greater awareness of what is violent even if they don't see it.

The study of nine to 13-year-olds found they could tell the difference between fiction and real life and therefore found violence on the news more disturbing than in soaps.
