http://tvbarn.com/Of all the properties and content channels involved in the merger of NBC and Universal, the one you've heard the least about is Newsworld International. Indeed, it's possible that even media junkies have never heard of NWI, though they have almost certainly heard of its sister channel, the spunky red-dot Trio network, which along with NWI comprises the Emerging Networks division of the soon-to-be NBC Universal.
... Indeed, we must blame Canada for NWI's creation, if not for its subsequent neglect at the hands of the Americans who took it off Canada's hands a few years ago. NWI was created by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to export its news to U.S. cable systems. Its big success was getting on DBS satellite TV, which makes up the lion's share of its 14 million subscribers. The rest are a smattering of mostly Time Warner Cable digital systems, including my house.
... I discovered NWI just before the war in Iraq earlier this year, and in particular "The National," the flagship newscast of the CBC. I can't say that "The National" is the best nightly newscast in North America. It's not even the most-watched newscast in its native country; that distinction belongs to rival broadcaster CTV, which has the good sense not to put its flagship newscast on until prime time has ended ("The National" airs at 10 p.m.). But one thing is indisputable:
"The National" is the best nightly newscast being piped into American homes.... Liberals -- like Al Gore, who reportedly had investors approach Vivendi Universal earlier this year about buying NWI -- started gravitating to the channel's war coverage after discovering it offered their own version of "fair and balanced" viewpoints. CBC analysts and reporters openly criticized U.S. motives and decision-making throughout the war, without diminishing their news coverage.
