Bush Faces Sharp Challenges in Second Term - Reuters
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 11:13 AM by Spiffarino
The best part is where the author says the Democrats may actually behave like - *gasp!* - an opposition party!

By Steve Holland (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) will be confronted by strong domestic and foreign policy challenges as he begins a second term this week that will go a long way toward determining his place in the pantheon of American presidents.

. . .

"I think right now he could turn out to be a hero or a goat. It could go either way," said University of Texas political scientist Bruce Buchanan. "I think one thing you can say right now is he's one of the most ambitious and risk-taking presidents in history."

. . .

But for all Bush's talk about bipartisanship, Hess wonders whether Bush will be willing to make the compromises likely needed to pick up enough votes to advance his policies.

"Even after the election, when he has talked about bipartisanship, he talks about those folks coming aboard for his programs. He never talks about agreements and compromises and finding common ground," Hess said.

Oh reeeeeaaally? There's a surprise! :eyes:

1. Bush's inability to meet Democrats halfway
is good for the Democratic Party. It will strengthen those in our Party who strongly support core Democratic values and discourage the "moderates" who wheel and deal too readily. At this point, we Democrats have nothing to lose by speaking and acting with total integrity about the things we believe in -- single payer health care -- guaranteeing the solvency of Social Security -- equal opportunity for all -- adequately funding education -- protecting the environment -- working toward peace -- accepting our role in the international family of man -- acknowledging that a woman's right to choose is her constitutional right and not up for discussion while ensuring that poor women are not forced to abortion by their economic need -- graduated taxes, etc.

2. My sentiments exactly! I am tired of the congressional Democrats
saying "We will work with the pResident in a bi-partisan way." It is far past time for us to be very partisan. We have tried the other way and look what it got us. It is time Democrats become Democrats and stop this slide into oblivion.

3. Yea, Verily...
Aand I'm sick of Dianne Feinstein voting for Bush's
yax cuts for rich people, for his medicare plan
and for showering Condi Rice with praise as she plans
confirming her as Sec O State.

Dems like Feinsteinn need to be replaced---fuck her!

4. Are you in CA?

I left right before she took office. I may have to move back so I can vote against her in the primary. I am sick to death of Republican-Lite.

On edit: I am also sick of living in a "red" state.
