30 days from today
I will become an ex-journalist.

I think I should call it going into recovery (no offense to those in "real" recovery intended).

I've been in and out of journalism for almost 30 year and have worked as a sports photographer, reporter, editor, columnist and publisher. I have a nice award on my wall from my peers and I have created change in my community.

But, for financial and personal reasons, I'm going to put that behind me and leave the profession for good. I don't know what I want to do next, but I'm thinking of becoming an activist. ;-)

I need help creating my 12 step program. Any ideas?

3. step 2
jump in to help with election reform, get the local results from your area (and start reviewing them). Think of it like writing that book report in 3rd grade! They are awful, the more you look at them, the more bogus, they look, and post what you know here, like I found out that in Baltimore City, 1/3 of the Republican voters stayed home on election day, so the Republican mandate was to stay home and down a cold one!
You can do a lot of good right now in most anything but the most important thing I think of our time is exposing the neocons!

6. nice to meet you too!
It seems, in a couple of months, that I may have a LOT more time on my hands and get to post more.

I've been here for years but my post count is anemic. Guess that comes from working those journalist hours. yuck.

Now I get to be unemployed, which, I guess, puts me in good company!

7. I Know What It's Like To Step Away From Journalism
I stopped for several years after 15 years as a wire service editor and five years as a news service entrepreneur. But then I got back into it two years ago as project manager for World News Trust, an independent news media project. The difference is that I'm working on my own terms. Good luck. I know how it feels to want to step away. It's really important to take the time to gain (or regain)perspective. Cheers, Tad Goodwin

8. thanks, I appreciate that
I know I definitely need to regain perspective. Maybe some time away will help that.

I cannot imagine wanting to work in the profession again, but I said the same thing about marriage during my divorce (and my second marriage celebrates 10 years this fall) so I know things can change.

Meanwhile, I admire anyone in the field who can do their job and maintain their dignity, independence, and values.
