2. Here's why

In future history texts listing US Presidents, he'll always have an asterisk next to his name because of the theft of the 2000 election. So we decided to just truncate the "Bush" part and simply refer to him as *.

3. Here's my thoughts on it.......

the * is usually used to denote unusual circumstances. Bush* would signify the Florida stuff in 2000. Wasn't a clean victory. They do this in sports as well. If a player sets a record but it's during a season that is shortened by a strike there would be a * by their name denoting the unusual circumstances.

5. It goes back to Roger Maris beating Babe Ruth's record

Maris got 61 home runs, but he did it when the season included more games than when Babe Ruth hit 60. So they put his name in the record books with an * to indicate the special circumstances.

In the same way that Roger Maris didn't "really" beat Babe Ruth, Bush wasn't "really" elected president.


On edit: Some people use the * alone rather putting it next to Bush's name. That partly reflects a reluctance to mention the man at all (in a "speak of the devil" sort of way) and partly is a Doonesbury-type way of suggesting that there's no there there.

I think * is using a slightly visual means of refering to someone who is clearly an asshole.
