WASHINGTON (AFP) - American chief executives enjoyed a lucrative year in 2003, according to an annual survey by a private research group, the Conference Board.

Compensation -- salary, bonuses and long-term payments combined -- advanced in every industry, it said.

Corporate chiefs in the booming construction industry came off best, with a median, or middle-of-the-range, leader enjoying a 19.7-percent jump in compensation to 2.97 million dollars. Only 633,000 dollars of that money was paid in the form of salary.

Among the luckier chief executives, median compensation rose 8.1 percent to 2.20 million dollars in financial services, 11.2 percent to 2.17 million dollars in insurance, 7.1 percent to 1.84 million dollars in utilities and 6.5 percent to 1.76 million dollars in communications.

Welcome to the fascist greed-state.
