Congressional Study Notes Ways to Collect Billions More in Taxes
By EDMUND L. ANDREWS

ASHINGTON, Jan. 27 - The federal government could increase tax revenues by $311 billion over the next 10 years if it clamped down on hundreds of ways that individuals and corporations elude their obligations, according to a Congressional study issued on Thursday.

The report concludes that the nation's system for taxing overseas profits of American corporations is so flawed that the government would save $55 billion if it simply scrapped the system altogether.<snip>

For example, the report said the government could raise $164 billion over 10 years by changing the laws that exempt from payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare a variety of fringe benefits, including employer-paid health insurance and child care assistance.

The report also estimated that the government could raise $57 billion over the next decade by making it harder for self-employed people to avoid payroll taxes. And it said the government could raise $10.5 billion by expanding the federal tax on telephone service to cover data transfer over the Internet.<snip>

1. Nickle and dime the poor.
Do not tax where the money is.

One day the gated communities will fall.

Won't they?

4. do I smell that propganda smell?

This was the 2nd paragraph, it's proposing that the IRS shouldn't bother to tax anything from overseas...look, more incentive to outsource our jobs! Congress only passed a HR 4520 a massive corporate pork bill
that has tax incentives to offshore even more jobs...

now they are subtly proposing via this study that we shouldn't bother
to tax US corporations operating offshore at ALL!

They had the gaul to call HR 4520 the "save American jobs act" which
was of course would do the opposite and now this.

5. They could easily recoup millions of dollars - Humvee SUVs
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 12:09 PM by housewolf
by simply doing away with the corporate welfare perk of $100,000 that they give business for buying Humvees! Imagine.... our government buying Humvees for any business that wants them???? How in the world did the Humvee-maker get such an incredible deal? And just what lawmaker(s) are responsible for that incredible give-away?

Don't you think that if a company wants a Humvee that it should buy it for itself? Why is our government subsidising the purchase of extraordinarily expensive luxury-class sport-utility vehicles for companies to the tune of $100,000 each?

Why, Arnold himself has 6 or 7 of them --- that's more than a half a million dollars in support he has received from the government, himself.
