Closing arguments heard in pipefitter case (Fluor)
This story was published Thursday, August 25th, 2005
By Mary Hopkin, Herald staff writer

After seven weeks of testimony, attorneys laid out closing arguments Wednesday in a case in which 11 pipefitters are suing Fluor Federal Services, claiming the company laid them off for speaking up about safety concerns.

Jack Sheridan, the pipefitters' attorney, painted Fluor as a mega company that cares more about safety reports than safety and said Fluor managers did not follow company protocol when his clients were laid off. <snip>

The case was filed six years ago, but has been delayed by appeals that took it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 1997, a crew of seven pipefitters at what is now Fluor Federal Services objected when they were told to install a valve rated for 1,975 pounds per square inch for a test of radioactive waste pipes that needed to withstand 2,235 pounds per square inch. <snip>

1. Isn't Fluor a subsidiary of Halliburton?
I think that's the company my neighbor works for. He's a retired engineer but continues to get calls from Fluor to come out of retirement and is offered big bucks to go to Iraq or Saudi Arabia.

So far he's turned them down, but is tempted...

2. I dunno, but if you want to track it down here's a place to start:
HOUSTON, Texas, April 14, 1998 -- Arctic Pacific Contractors (APC), a 50/50 joint venture between Fluor Daniel (NYSE:FLR) and Brown & Root Energy Services, a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL), has been selected by Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. to provide project engineering, procurement, construction planning and other associated support services for the basic design concept and definition phases of the Sakhalin II project located along Russia's Pacific Coast. APC's contract value for this initial effort is approximately US$40 million.

Work is underway in Fluor Daniel's Houston office and will continue through first quarter 1999.

"The union of Fluor Daniel and Halliburton's Brown & Root Energy Services, to form APC, offered Sakhalin Energy unmatched value. APC has the experience, project management team, resource base and corporate commitment that Sakhalin Energy requires," said Sakhalin Energy's Project Manager Bill McCaslin. <snip>
