Sacrificing pork for the Gulf Coast
The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Sep. 20 - With the federal debt rising faster than floodwater through a broken levee, it's neither hard-hearted nor mean-spirited to ask, who's going to pay for rebuilding New Orleans?

President Bush, with his usual blithe spirit, promises the greatest rebuilding effort in the nation's history while making barely a nod to the fact that money doesn't grow on trees.

This is the same president who introduced the nation to the bottomless financial pit known as the Iraq war, pushed a drugs-for-seniors plan that is the most costly expansion of Medicare in its history, created a massive new bureaucracy for homeland security, thinks a race to Mars would be nifty, and never met a tax he didn't want to cut.

Does no one in the Grand Old Party that controls every branch of government, and used to stand for fiscal integrity and balanced budgets, think this is insane? <snip>
