Hey folks, need some industry analysis help if you care to.
I'm working on a financial analysis paper for school and I'm trying to find industry data for Nike's industry. Specifically, I'm looking for annual sales for that industry for the last five years. Best I can find is one year data on the usual places like yahoo finance etc. I'm banging my head and using every research database I can find through my school library connection but I'm coming up snake eyes and getting frustrated.

The industry code for SIC is 3021 and NAICS is 316211. I would think I should be able to find this type of data through the govt, but all I can find is pay investor research sites.

Any help or direction would be so greatly appreciated.

6. So far..

...this is the best I could find. It must be possible to search by the SIC and NAICS code in there, but I haven't figured it out so far.

Try this though:

Go to "BUsiness"

Go to "Business News"

On the "Businesss News" page, the second pull-down menu says "Select a News Source." Select "Industry News" there.

Then in the next (Step Three) text box, type "Nike" and select "Company Name" in that pull-down box. Then hit your search button.

That will get you a bunch of stuff. I'll look some more to see if there isn't a different way....

8. If I were you....

....I'd go into the library and use their Standard and Poors' Industry Surveys. IT's a good source, even if it's not online. For the life of me, I can't find anywhere in the instructions on how to search for these codes. It's crazy!! There must be a way....

I'll look a little longer and let you know if I figure anything else out.

10. Close, but that just shows me every company that match that SIC code
and then only 2003-2005. I really can't believe finding this kinda thing is this stinking hard. Grrrr.

The thing that kills me, I found several investor sites offering exactly what I need for pay. I'm so tempted right about now.:-)

12. Yep, you'd have to read and think!

Like I said -- Standard and Poors' Industry Surveys.

Makes it all very easy, just have to get up and get to the library.

13. LOL, reading and thinking is for the birds.:-)
Well, guess I'll have to check out the library. It's closed now and about an hour drive away.

I appreciate the help though, seriously.

15. What about the first set of instructions I sent??

Even if you have to read a bunch of articles, it should give you a pretty good picture. I would think the articles more helpful than the Company profiles.

The reason this stuff is so hard to find is because companies don't WANT this information out to help their competitors.

Now, now, research is putting a lot of information together form different sources. I don't blame you though, if you can find the S&Ps, it will make things much easier.

19. I think I got a good source. Standard and Poor has something called
NetAdvantage. It has links to industry reports, so I can look up the stats in the 5 diff industry reports and go from there. Phewwww.

11. Something like this?
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 06:18 PM by punpirate
http://www.census.gov/epcd/ec97/industry/E316211.HTM

This is from the Census Bureau's Annual Retail Trade Survey.

Also, your search, specifically on Nike, may be complicated by the fact that they are not actually a manufacturer themselves. Technically, they are a marketer of the finished product. They have no manufacturing facilities themselves (they subcontract all manufacturing from offshore). While they are in direct competition with US manufacturers, they may not show up in the manufacturing statistics.

Cheers.

17. It's got exactly the data I need, but the timeframe is wrong.
It has the numbers from 1997 to 2002. I think might be able to use 2000-2002 from this and then I just have to worry about the remaining three years. I'm getting closer.
