Novell to acquire SuSE Linux
Longtime Microsoft foe Novell has signed an agreement to acquire SuSE Linux for $210-million (U.S.) in cash, while IBM, the most powerful backer of the Linux OS, will make a $50-million investment in Novell.

The moves, announced Tuesday, could boost the fortunes of SuSE, the No. 2 seller of Linux, increase the competitive pressure on No. 1 Red Hat, and provide a new direction for Novell's rivalry with Microsoft.

1. Wasn't Microsoft already in conferences
to aquire RedHat?

However, I am looking forward to this. Hopefully, Microsoft does not but out all the European companies.

Also, I wonder how the new Microsoft Longhorn version will turn out to be.

3. Longhorn... oh, you'll love this...

5GB required for the install and needs even the fastest hardware for it to run even sluggishly... :eyes: Typical Microsoft macroslop...

2. Wow! Pity I'm switching to Mandrake...
WineX has certain problems under SuSE. Not big ones, but Winex is tested under Red Hat and Mandrake...

I wonder why they didn't buy Mandrake instead...

4. Mandrake is pretty good
I use it primarily, and I'm really happy with the ease of setup and natural Linux look and feel (as far as Xwindows and the email setup). I'm still waiting for a few apps, but I only use this for email and keeping up with actual news from the internet. And it's fast as hell. With a cable connection, I'm probably running as fast as a T1 connection at times, and Linux doesn't limit my system speed.

5. I need a webhost. Andy recommendation for me?
Before I had Feature Price which went out of business. I really liked them and hope to get the same (near) services.

1. 1G space
2. unlimited bandwidth (as long as you don't hurt the system)
3. $10 a month

---------------------

I've browsed a little and don't see this being offered now but... any suggestions?

would like at least:

1. 500M (I've got QT Movies which not many people would watch. Not high user website.)
2. I don't want to pay if I use over my bandwidth. I want the site shut down until.. whatever. Like Tripod shuts you down for hours.
3. Can go higher.
4. I want to have more than one www.?.com assigned to my space/IP. (I'm not sure what the tech. terms are? Subdomain?) So one doesn't have to sign up muliple 'Basic' accounts. (I know some do this because I read about it.) None of my sites will have much traffic.
5. And I want my other space to use for DU pic posting.
6. A moral Democratic oriented company

What do you guys use?

Thanks for the help!

6. No suggestions
I only do this for play, and to get real news. I'm on Roadrunner, but I have no idea what kind of webhosting they could set up for you. And it would rely on a Time-Warner cable connection, which runs $30/month PLUS $45/month for Roadrunner. Their site is at http://roadrunner.com/v5/home/0,1793,146,00.html if you want to look, but that's probably not what you had in mind, eh?

7. Novell hoping to slip-stream on IBM
With the acquisition of SuSE, Novell is now IBM's principal Linux supplier. That's gotta help with Ray's lifelong ambition to bring down Bill. He's still pissed about the check in Win3.1 that made it fail on DR-DOS.

9. linux gurus
I will need a pc soon. would rather not bring Bill Gates into my home once again.
Any suggestions for good linux alternatives? Need the usual family-type stuff:
word processing, internet on DSL, office suite that has compatible formats for
import/export.

Oh, and any good GUIs on linux ?

10. Linux
You might want to look into Lindows.

Most of my dealings w/Linux have been from a command line, but I've heard of Linux GUIs of Gnome & KDE.

12. Try Xandros
It's a Lindows style Debian variant. It has a lot of nice features like a Windows style file manager and Codeweavers CrossOver plugins for windows programs, and a trial version of Netraverse Win4Lin (which lets you run a full install of windows 95, 98 ,me on your Gnome, KDE desktop). It's what I recommend to anyone who wants to try Linux for the first time. I also like Debian AptGet update method as opposed to the RPM package system. Xandros has one of the simplest linux installs I've ever seen. It cost about the same as Lindows (99$), but you dont have to use just their software repository, you can use Debians sources (stable tree is recomended to keep all of Xandrose's features working), but as you grow more accustomed to linux you can upgrade to the testing and unstable trees of the apt repositories.

I run the unstable branch and still don't have a fraction of the problems I had with hanging and crashing in windows.
