Anybody ever sold silver?

I have some that I have never used and would like to get rid of. How do you go about selling it? I know there is ebay but besides that, what else do you do?

1. coin dealers will buy it at bullion prices....

it's a huge market there.

2. contact an antiques dealer in your area.

I have sold several silver platters, but I researched them myself first and then took them to dealers to see what I would get for them. You need to consider the price of the raw silver, the condition of the pieces, how "sexy" they are as far as adornment, etc.

3. Some jewellers buy flatware and tea services

but you won't get much out of it but the price per weight of silver unless the set is ornate enough to appeal to new money. You can also offer it at auction with a minimum set at its price as bullion.

4. Different metal exchanges will buy it from you

You can also check locally to see if anyone is buying silver in your area. If it is in the form of coins from any country, coin dealers will also be interested. Realize that you won't get as much for your silver as people are selling silver for at this time.

You may wish to consider using the silver to pay down debts with individuals to whom you owe money, or with whom you wish to do business. You may find that a person who wishes to sell you a garden tiller or is willing to fix your plumbing might be willing to do the work and be paid in silver based upon the value of the metal itself. This is especially true if the silver is NOT in coin form (then they might merely take it at face value, which is far less than it is worth).

I'd check all options and then use the one that would do you the most good.

5. Is it in coin/bar format?

Local coin shops might be able to do it, check around for pricing and their ability to handle a transaction of the size you'd like to make.

I have done it online with a company in California. It worked out pretty well.

6. The silver is silverware mostly.

Thirty years ago I registered a silver pattern when I was getting married. The only person who ever got me any was my mother, who would purchase a piece at Christmas. I never got a full set and thus have never used it and prefer by stainless and silver plate. That is primarily what I would like to sell.

7. If you know the pattern name & maker

go to www.replacements.com where you can research the current selling price. You could offer it on craigslist, ebay or try selling to an antiques or jewelry dealer who carries flatware. Replacements would also buy it for a fairly decent price if it is a popular pattern.

8. The silver is silverware mostly....

Heck, where is your sentimentality? Our family silverware is divided up amongst us and we each use our own few pieces once in awhile. Memories - your Mom bought those pieces of silverware for you (hope chest). She wanted you to enjoy. :-)

Set a nice small table now and then - with her silverware that she bought for you - and thank your Mom in your meal prayer, if you say one.

You may sell it for a few dollars, but memories are priceless.

11. I also have her full set of silver,

besides two full sets of silver plate and two sets of stainless. The stuff I am thinking of selling is five spoons, one fork and one knife. It's still in the package it came in. So when I need memories, I use her things.

13. Many coin dealers will buy silver

They will pay less than the spot price for silver though. Shop around. Some will buy for 50 cents per ounce under spot, others will pay $1, or evern $1.50 under spot.
