India's Sterlite Industries (STRL.BO) (SLT.N) on Saturday agreed to buy the operating assets of bankrupt copper miner Asarco for $2.6 billion, the latest in the series of overseas acquisitions by Indian firms.

Tuscon-based Asarco, the third largest copper maker in U.S. had total revenue of $1.9 billion in 2007, Sterlite, a unit of Vedanta Resources Plc (VED.L) said in a statement.

"Asarco is a strategic fit with Sterlite's existing copper business," the Indian firm said in the statement.

1. Remember what Darth Cheney said?
About the American way of life not being negotiable? This will settle it when Americans no longer have anything left to sell. Then the American way of life will be to sit on a curb shaking a cup with a couple of coins in it.

2. If the coins are made of corporate copper, you may not have them in your cup.

Battle lines drawn over sale of Asarco
Ariz. mining firm's sale to India group riles ousted parent

Asarco LLC's ousted parent, Grupo Mexico, said Monday that it would vigorously fight the proposed sale of the Tucson copper producer to one of India's largest mining companies, Sterlite Industries Ltd.

"We will use any legal resource we can to recover our interest in Asarco," said Tom Johnson, a spokesman for Grupo Mexico in New York.

A committee of creditors running bankrupt Asarco has agreed to sell its principal operating assets to Sterlite for $2.6 billion.

The sale must be approved by the bankruptcy court in Corpus Christi, Texas, where it's being heard, and Johnson notes the sale is far from a done deal.

Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 09:32 PM by lib2DaBone
Uncle Georgie has gone loco.. and he's passing the savings on to you. He's selling Roads, Bridges, Turnpikes, everything must go during our super "SELL-Off-AMERICA-SALE-ABRATION". How about a nice Water System of your very own? In Florida, we've got a newly reconditioned "Alligator Alley", a well-equipped toll road that generates lots of cash flow, and it can be YOURS! How about the Pennsylvania Turnpike... lease or buy for one low price. We have a huge selection of Turnpikes and Toll roads (all paid for by taxpayers money) and we're passing the savings on to you, our favorite foreign government. So hurry, shop today while the selection is still good and before Uncle Georgie and Cousin Karl have to leave for their private Million-Acre ranch in Paraguay. Once inventory is gone,IT"S GONE... we'll close the doors for good on this great country, so you don't want to miss out. Say, can you use a good, late-model hospital? How about a nice School District? Of course! We take Euro Dollars or Chinese notes. Open until 9 tonight, free balloons for the kids....just tell 'um "Uncle Georgie" sent you.. and hurry..hurry..hurry... it's INSANE!
