Wal-Mart shopper finds nail in pail of ice cream
Wow... a Wal-Mart shopper in Canada found a "five-centimetre-long metal nail to go with her" bowl of ice cream, according to the Calgary Herald

Why do people still shop at Wal-Mart? If it's not toxic dog good or poisonous kids toys, it's nail in your ice cream. I guess that's what happens when you get 70% of your products from communist China.

2. it's still cheaper
some of the cheapest food you're going to find is at the wal-mart. It's easy if you can afford it to avoid the place, but if you're living month to month, and even going into debt month to month for whatever reason (usually health care bills) then you're going to pinch your pennies whereever you can and that means sucking it up and buying the generic wal-mart brand foods.

7. Really?
Wow here you can get the same amount of a wal-mart generic for sometimes 4x or 5x less than the name brand at the regular grocery stores. it's marginally cheaper than the super generics at the grocery store.

13. I generally don't buy generic
And I have price shopped here and haven't found much in the way of savings vs other stores in the area.

15. Plenty of people don't have that luxury
the generics at Wal-Mart are insanely cheap when compared to name brands. With some things you can tell the difference, but with others you can't. Still, it's mostly just a matter of saving money for some people. I'm not begrudging you for buying name brands. I'm just saying that people who really are cutting their costs and being realistic about their budgets don't have a choice if they don't want to start accruing debt out the wazoo.

8. If you live in a rural area
You would see the difference. I live 25 miles from the nearest Walmart. I have only one grocery store in the town I live in. I can drive to Walmart, 50 miles round trip, but two weeks of groceries and save money. I get 34 miles to the gallon on the highway, so it costs me about $6.00 to make the round trip. I can save at least $50 dollars after gas expense by making the trip. I can get more than just groceries, so that helps. Just the savings on cleaning supplies, laundry soap, toilet paper, and dog and cat food, is more than the price of gas!

I know to many Walmart is a bad word, but if I can save around $100 a month making two trips to Walmart, it's worth it. I also have to take my daughter to the orthodontist every 6 weeks to a larger town that is 60 miles away. When I go there I also shop at other stores that have good sales, which also helps. I will admit that in that town I do find better sales on some items than at Walmart, but even shopping the sales locally, does not save me as much as going to Walmart.

11. Yea but Wal-Mart drives down wages
I think the problem with Wal-Mart is that it is bad for the economy as a whole -- it drives down wages, forces jobs overseas and puts a burden on the taxpayers by not funding health care. Not to mention the environmental degradation that taxpayer deal with.

14. Wages couldn't be any lower in our area.
Wal-Mart would be a step up for most people around here. The majority of the employers have inadequate or no benefits, either. We're looking forward to having a Wal-Mart.

6. I don't think you can blame Walmart
The ice cream was made by Nestle. If I wanted to be ticked off at anyone I think it would be the Nestle corporation! I don't agree with all of Walmarts tactics to make money, but we need to place the blame where it belongs, don't you think?

9. "After pulling the nail out of her mouth, Leonard immediately called Nestle to voice her concern"
Has anybody really bothered to examine the details of this story. Five centimeters longs is about 2 inches long. So she has a bowl of ice cream and takes a spoonful and the ice cream in that spoonful has a 2 inch long nail. Not only does she not notice the nail in the spoonful of ice cream, she manages to get it into her mouth before she notices it. She never even noticed the nail when she was scooping the ice cream into the bowl.

I am only surprised that she didn't swallow it because there apparently are a good number of people who have no trouble swallowing the story. I don't shop at WalMart even though there are 2 in the city where I live, but I have trouble with stories about people "finding" things in products.
