How Russian consumer electronics manufacturers drove their Japanese competitors out of business |
|
I don't know how they did it. Do you? Of course, in general terms it's easy to understand.
For example, we worry about a high world population level because we know that it's associated with poverty. Japan has one of the world's highest population densities, especially when one subtracts land that is neither suitable for towns nor suitable for farms to supply food to towns.
For example, neither Marx nor Lenin wrote much about sporting competitions. Obviously their real area of expertise and esoteric knowledge was economics. Nevertheless, the USSR was highly competitive in the Olympics. Imagine then what wonders they must have seeded when they did their philosophical and political leadership work.
A political establishment founded on recognition of the important role of economics couldn't fail to see the opportunities for world-wide export of consumer electronics devices. Furthermore, when it came to winning approval from people for a political career, what generated admiration wasn't some profitable but ultimately meaningless short-term performance in speculative currency trading. In Russia, engineers have been involved in politics.
However, I presume that superior designs are not the one and only key to explaining how Russian consumer electronics manufacturers drove their Japanese competitors out of business. What about harmony in factories? Surely Russia has developed techniques for organizing strong unions that help workers be all they can be. What about the systems used to evaluate job applicants to avoid missing good applicants who don't look good on paper? What about the careful use of small advertising budgets? How about the various systems for quality control that make advertising a mere supplement to the free publicity from periodicals such as Consumer Reports? Why would anyone even bother to look at a Japanese product when "made in Russia" is synonymous with high quality?
