IMF Plans Mission To Latvia To Review Loan Program, Economy

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The International Monetary Fund will send a mission to Latvia on Feb. 17 to review progress under the recent assistance package and study the state of the economy.

"The mission will review the status of the Latvian economy and of the measures agreed with the authorities," an IMF spokesperson said in a statement.

A press conference will be held at the end of the visit, on March 4.
The mission is part of the quarterly review of the EUR1.7 billion loan the IMF gave Latvia in December, which formed part of a broader EUR7.5 billion international aid package for the struggling Eastern European country.

Like other countries in the region, Latvia has been hit hard by the financial crisis, with the economy sliding into recession.
Fiscal austerity measures attached to the loan have sparked protests, and the government barely survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament on Wednesday.

I hope they protest.
