SHTF Scenarios.
Let's get it all out there. These posts hinting at the real possibility of global castastrophe have many, including me, fretting over the worst possible imaginations. Worrying seldom helps. Think over this.

If paper money becomes worthless, if the government goes into default, and if the world turns to the Euro to replace the dollar, all the silver and gold hoarding in the world will not make food appear on the tables of most of the population. Interstate commerce would grind to a halt. Food would not make it to the market. With millions starving and searching for food, any attempts that I make to locate a stock of groceries with my silver or gold bars is going to draw a crowd so large that the masses will likely descend upon the food supply before I can get home with it. Law enforcement would cease to exist except in vigilante gangs. Waste, garbage and disease would begin decimating the landscape. Farms would be invaded and the crops devoured by people similar to locusts. Society will break down to the point that nuclear self annihilation would be a preferable way of final demise.

Prepare for scenarios similar to this if you can. But, if you can't prepare, do not fret that you will be alone in your misery. Most all of us will be sharing the grief and starving together. My preference would be for all of us to gather in some Nevada desert, call for "broken arrow", and have a B-52 drop a thermonuclear hydrogen bomb on our own pod. It beats the hunger pains of starvation and the fevers of disease.

8. C'mon Ocelot. Just one Recommend would be great.
I attempted to calm and reassure everyone. Great compassion went into that.

10. Add some zombies and I'll think about it.
The scenario just doesn't ring true without zombies.

5. If the worst happens?
We will be facing another French revolution. I'm talking dragging the fuckers responsible for this shit through the streets and ripping them apart limb by limb. Let us hope it does not have to come to this.

16. Well, there are a few CEOs who might be candidates
for the guillotine, or it's modern day equivalent. If we do get to anything close to a SHTF scenario, they're going to have to drag all their stuff to inaccessible island nations to avoid being targeted.

6. Jack, Slowly get up, go outside, take a deep breath and look up in the sky.
People have been trading and surviving without money for thousands of years. We don't need the dollar to get along. Look to the third world, its not pretty but it isn't thermonuclear.

15. Can I ask why gold and silver are valuable?
I've never understood this--their value is largely symbolic, too, right?

I mean, sure, gold's trading at more than $900 an ounce. But why? What does it *do*? You can make jewelry out of it, but you can make jewelery out of a lot of things that don't trade for $900 an ounce.

It has value because a long time ago, someone said it has value, right?. If people trade food for gold, they have no food, and they have something that they can't eat, can't heat their homes with, can't cure cancer or the cold or bandage a cut with...

(This is my semi-long-winded way of saying I don't get the gold frenzy...plant a garden if it makes you feel better, learn a barterable skill if it makes you feel better, and watch out for falling acorns.)

20. Gold as a hedge against inflation
Imagine the Germans pre Wiemar Republic
If they had used their still-good currency to buy gold
then during the hyper inflation event
they could have bought English Pounds or something
---- instead of a wheelbarrow :)

25. The problem with gold?
Gold would be good to have if the $ loses most of it's value. Problem is that this would likely happen in a very poor social environment where you might have trouble holding on to it? Not much good to you if someone takes it from you? As soon as you try to spend it...someone now knows you have it.

Just as good or better than gold would be land...food...water...basic skills...and stable social surroundings? People would kill for cigarettes...soap...booze...etc.

27. Yes, someone said it had value
and it does as an industrial metal and jewelry. Hoarders of gold drive up the price when economic times get bad; it's a good indication how bad things are, if anything else. All currency is based on the same concept...someone says it has value, everyone believes it and then we can trade it for goods.

22. GUNS! GUNS! Buy more GUNS, you fools!
The ability to kill trumps the ability to do anything else. The OP pretty much agrees with it, but he's wrong in talking thermonuclear suicide. That's the Columbine way, and both Harris and Klebold killed themselves, meaning they lost. You win by killing OTHER PEOPLE, not yourself.

You want to go with the tinfoil hat people on predicting the future, this is your only logical conclusion. And you don't wear a tinfoil hat; you wear full body armor and kill anyone you see.

24. Take the CRASH COURSE?
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 09:11 AM by wuvuj

http://www.chrismartenson.com/crashcourse

Many Americans have never experienced war on US soil...serious hunger, etc....most think this is just another short-term crisis. All I can say is...laugh while you still can. There are just way too many "forced changes" coming our way for things to go back to "normal".

Guess what...this is NOT a drill.

I see the HA..HA reaction on many forums on various subjects where the level of knowledge is poor.

I'm seeing way too much info by responsible and knowledgable people saying that things don't look so good.
