Bulgarian Farmers Block Greek Border

Sheep breeders from Southwest Bulgaria have threatened to block the main checkpoint between Bulgaria and Greece if the government doesn't pay them promised subsidies for farm land and pasture grounds, DeltaNews reports Monday.

The farmers have given a deadline of February 12th for the government to do its part, before they follow their Greek colleagues' example and block the border.

They demand that the money from the EU's Agroecology and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development should be given to them. Farmers also demand that by the middle of 2009 the subsidies for animals per capita should be paid.

Milk producers also want subsidies for produced and sold quantities of quality milk of EUR0,10 per liter of cow milk and 0,13 for sheep, goat and buffalo milk.

Southwest Bulgarian farmers also demand higher duties for milk imports from third party countries.
