Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that an early presidential election could be held depending on the situation in the country, rather than according to the views of certain politicians.
"There will be no early presidential elections and no realization of calls mentioned by
Leonid Makarovych ," he told the Fifth TV Channel late on Tuesday, while commenting on a statement by Kravchuk, who called on incumbent President Viktor Yuschenko to resign and call snap presidential elections.
"I think this statement will only bring another wave of political confrontation in Ukraine," Lytvyn said.
However, he also said that early presidential and parliamentary elections could be held.
"Although I don't rule out early presidential elections, this will depend on the development of the situation, rather than declarations by certain politicians, groups of politicians, or political parties. This situation might spiral out of control, until politicians and the authorities have to accept early presidential and parliamentary elections," Lytvyn said.
"I'm deeply convinced that in this scenario, there are no guarantees that the elections will be held in a civilized and democratic way," he said.
