Liberals Freak Out Over Obama's "Universal Accounts" (DU gets a mention)
Liberals Freak Out Over Obama's "Universal Accounts"
http://www.businessinsider.com/dems-freak-out-over-obamas-2009-2

As we recently discussed, one of the options for the federal government is to "default" on what it owes Social Security. In other words, it could change the deal and save money by paying seniors less than what they feel they were promised. It's not pretty, but it has advantages. Seniors aren't going to go to war on us if we default on them. Also, many seniors have gotten a tremendous deal, and if you incorporate Social Security into a holistic view of US finances, this is clearly a gigantic burden.

With the economy under so much stress, it finally feels like there may be some political will to do something about the entitlements mess. It'll still be as painful and difficult as pulling Nancy Pelosi's teeth but it could happen. Obama made a slight nod to it last night with his support of "Universal Savings Accounts", new tax-free self-controlled retirement accounts.

The folks at Democratic Underground, the loudest liberal message board on the web, are freaking out over this. They think OBAMA IS THE SECOND COMING OF DUBYA AND THAT HE'S GOING TO KILL SOCIAL SECURITY. So that's a positive sign right there.

hyperbole much?

2. Well, they were sure freaking out here last night.
Although it's really good to freak out about something before you know all the details. I keeps the old heart pumping fast that way.

7. Well we do show up on Google a lot.
I love how he equates liberals being against it as good.

You know, like all those other great things us stupid liberals were against.. PATRIOT act, Iraq war, the new bankruptcy bill, medicare drug co. giveaway, deregulation, TARP.. if liberals hate it, it must be good stuff.

19. It better be as millions paid into it. It's not a gift. It's a promise.
It's not a "benefit."

11. I think Mr. Weisenthal is running a little far with this. Just because P.O. mentioned Universal
Savings Accounts, that does NOT mean as Joe Weisenthal suggests, that Obama would consider "defaulting" on SS. Obama is tossing this idea out only for consideration for FUTURE workers. His mentioning U.S.A.s in no way means he would consider changing "the deal" with those already in the system as Weisenthal suggests.

"In other words, it could change the deal and save money by paying seniors less than what they feel they were promised."

It's kinda nice to be noticed (by Joe Weisenthal) though, if even by a conservative mouthpiece.

12. U.S.A.s are optional additions to, not replacements for, Social Security.
Just like a person can still put money into a 401k or IRA, and Social Security as well.

I've seen epic days' worth of DU "freakout"threads and that doesn't begin to qualify. Between the 5,000 Jindal threads, I'm amazed he even located it.

15. Ok... I know people here are going to think...
I'm naive, but I think Obama is a deadly smart politician. He has outfoxed the Repubs on the Stim... they look like pikers, and O's popularity shows that people believe O is just trying to help.

I think (Hope!) that O is just laying out a red herring for the Repubs. He can promise to privatize SS all the way, because he knows the Dems in Congress won't let it happen. When none of those "universal accounts" see the light of day, O can just shrug and say that he tried.

I think the Repubs are sooooo outclassed by this guy.

WHICH seniors have gotten a "tremendous deal"???

I've paid in for forty years; my own retirement savings have just been looted by Wall Street (I could have bought a nicer house for cash than I've ever lived in for what I've lost in the last 6 mos.); and I can promise everyone that even if I get every penny of SS I'm supposed to get before they start "fixing" it, it wasn't gonna be a tremendous deal -- just desperately needed.
