ABC tells it like it is with "Over a Barrell, the truth about Oil"
This report aired last Friday.

They brought up the point that the unspoken cost of oil is the Defense expeditures to secure mid-East oil fields. This is on ABC!!

They interiewed Wesley Clark who said securing the supply of oil has been "one of the key factors driving U.S. foreign policy".

Serious journalism from ABC! amazing. Keep it up ABC!

1. I watched this program.
The oil companies have us by the balls. They control the available quantity of gasoline and can manipulate the price. The oil company lobbyists control the politicians. Nothing that we did not already know.

2. that's why we need alternative energy. The majority of oil comes from the middle east
even if we don't get most of ours from there... they benefit from our addiction to oil. and so do the terrorists. So, for our national security, and for our own sense of self respect, too... we need to cut them off at the knees and get away from petroleum. If we could come up with a viable competitive alternative, then the cost of oil would plummet and we wouldn't have to go kiss saudi arabia's ass begging them not to reduce production and such.

3. Impossible task
If one truly understands how much oil this country needs to exist and do just our daily tasks, them one would understand why we will never find an alternative to oil. Besides, we have all the alternatives currently known and none of them will be able to replace the millions of barrels of oil we use on a daily basis..

4. "If one truely understands"
Most people just don't seem to grasp the scale of the problem.

5. i don't think it's impossible.... beyond the forces that work to make it
seem so. We may never get rid of the need altogether, but I believe that we could limit it a great deal by conservation and alternatives. Eventually we will HAVE TO.... the oil isn't going to flow forever.

6. Re: ABC tells it like it is with "Over a Barrell, the truth about Oil"
I was out of town on Friday and missed the report. While they touched on the unspoken cost of oil being defense spending did they address domestic production of oil which is without this additional cost burden?

7. Yes, they did. Interviewed T. boone Pickens. He said we can't pump our way out.
We only have about 3% of the world's oil resources. We use 25%. Deep drilling can supply some but at considerable cost (although they didn't get into that).

if you go to the ABC link I put in OP they have the program broke up into about 5 segments.

I was amazed to see such a forthright presentation on oil on Corporate media. On their site, as of a couple days ago, they had over 150 comments from viewers. I think they hit a nerve. Maybe people are finally ready to listen.

I wanted to post on this to compliment a member of M$M for really talking honestly (esp re military costs in dollars and lives) about the true cost of oil. If cost of gas included the military costs for securing oil fields we would have no trouble finding support for alternative (renewable fuels). We'd be selling a lot fewer SUVs too.
