The encouraging retail sales report for November was a surprise. U.S. retailers have been reporting generally lackluster results for the start of the holiday shopping season. But sales rose 1.3 percent last month, after a 1.1 percent October gain, the Commerce Department said. It was the healthiest advance since August. And it was more than double the increase economists had expected.

Excluding autos, retail sales rose 1.2 percent — triple the expected gain. A 6 percent surge in sales at service stations, partly reflecting higher gasoline prices, led the overall gain. But even excluding that jump, retail sales posted a solid 0.8 percent rise in November.

Also sparking optimism was a report Friday that U.S. businesses unexpectedly increased their inventories in October, halting a slide of 13 consecutive declines. The small gain raised hopes that businesses will begin restocking their depleted shelves, helping support the economic recovery.

Businesses boosted inventories 0.2 percent in October — better than the 0.3 percent drop economists had expected. Total business sales rose 1.1 percent, the fifth straight gain.

THese are good signs but it could take 5 to 6 years before we actually see employment get back to something like "normal", according to the Fed Reserve. So don't think this REPUBLICAN DYSTOPIA will be over anytime soon - especially with Republicans fighting savagely any efforts by Obama and the Dems to do anything to help the economy. ... Not content with causing this GREAT 'RECESSION' (a Depression by any other name) by causing the DEREGULATION DISASTER of 2008 and the Housing Bubble (with overly expansionist money policies during the Cheney administration - used to keep a sick economy looking like it was not in trouble) the Corporate Lobbyist party now is fighting to keep Obama and the Dems from doing the things needed to help us recover from the greatest economic disaster this country has seen since the Great Depression (I).

It's all out war in Congress thanks to the Republicans - The American Taliban - willing to destroy America to undermine any and every effort of Obama and the Democrats to rebuild AMerica.

and it is not going to return any time soon.

Once people start to realize that, the healing can begin. Until then, it's just so much wishful thinking.

2. I like to think their is more to it than "thinking". Actions are required. THe Corporate Lobbyist
party is fighting all ACTIONS by the President and the Democrats to rebuild the economy nearly destroyed by the Deregualation Disaster and the Bush era Easy Money policies which produced the Housing bubble. Actions will get us out of this REPUBLICAN DYSTOPIA but people's thinking and attitudes are definitely an important factor in success. And here too the American Taliban are wreaking their havoc, trying to sow suspicion and division. This helps in their efforts to kill Obama's efforts to rebuild OUR economy.

You are correct in that the American Taliban are trying to sell the idea that this rebuilding effort should be possible in a few months. But the report by the Federal Reserve put it correctly. It could take 5 years before we get back to an employment picture anything close to what we consider acceptable. People need to realize it's not possible to rebuild this much damage to the economy in a year. It will take longer. But the Corporate Lobbyist party want people to think Obama should be able to accoomplish this in 18 months or so. Defeat the Democrats and Obama even if it costs us our economy and our jobs.

--- The American Taliban (John Boehner's party of nihilism and chaos) - they do far more damge to us tha AL Kaida ever could.
