The Netherlands has banned the import and sale of products made from seals commercially hunted in Canada, an official source said Thursday. A government directive, dated July 17, said the ban applied to products from harp and hooded seals.
But it added that products dervived from seals hunted traditionally by the Inuit people would be exempt from the embargo.
The directive did not specify when the measure would take effect.
"We are delighted with this decision to ban seal-derived products from entering The Netherlands as it is a clear sign that the Dutch people want no part of Canada's cruel and unnecessary hunt," said Marcel Bertsch, director of The Netherlands office of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Belgium adopted the same measure in January.
