Death toll rises in southern Europe's heatwave

Helena Smith in Athens and Agencies
Wednesday July 25, 2007
The Guardian

Southern Europe sizzled in record-breaking temperatures yesterday with the heatwave being blamed for deaths in Hungary and Romania, power cuts in Macedonia and forest fires from Serbia to Greece.

Up to 500 people have died in Hungary because of the heatwave with deaths attributed to heatstroke, cardiovascular problems and other illnesses aggravated by high temperatures which reached a record high of 41.9C (107F) in the southern city of Kiskunhalas.

Countries across the Balkan peninsula also laboured under temperatures that hit a historic 43C in Belgrade and 44C in Bulgaria. In an urgent announcement, Greece's weather service predicted temperatures of 45C (113F) and the government urged people to restrict their movements and stay indoors.

1. Strange I have heard no mention of a heatwave in Europe.
We certainly don't get much "news" in America anymore.

Yesterday, it was mostly Lohan on CNN, Fox and MSNBC - main sources of news on cable until the 6 o'clock evening news on the major networks.

500 is a high number of deaths from heat. I'm sorry these people are suffering and dying. I don't know if they have the means to get cool and safe with air conditioners or have air conditioned buildings they can visit to escape the heat.

2. The last time Europe had a deadly heatwave, the MSM reaction was laughter.
"Those French socialists are getting just what they deserve." was the reaction that I recall.

3. Yes, I do recall that. I am just abhorred that any suffering and death
be made the butt of a joke. So many of this country have lost their humanity. Some even make fun of our own, example - the Katrina victims.

I'm sad for America and how far it has slipped.
