1. I think most of Florida will score Not Walkable... things are close, |
|
but not that close and handy without a car.

Of course, I noticed that it doesn't have some of the grocery and the new Hardware and bike store. Also, I walk to work, (only about 10 minutes away). I haven't had a car in over 20 years.

... they gave my n'hood a 46 but i live +/- 50 yards from a converted railway that's now a running/walking/biking trail which gives easy access to pretty much every other part of the city ...
Hmmm.

The closest thing is a Gambino's Pizza and I have never seen it. I don't think it is there. Other than that most things are 3+ miles and that is if you count a Casey's General Store (a glorified Quik Shop) as a restaurant.

amenities. Stores are within a mile or less, as are restaurants and bus stops. This is a very strolly/dog-walky/bicycling neighborhood, and yet it scored 15! Which is just nuts...

... and they say nobody walks in LA.
The map didn't snag the Trader Joes a few blocks from my house, so I suspect the score is actually higher.

13. 49, but some of the listings are bogus . . . |
|
for example, the closest bookstore they list is at a Catholic shrine up the road . . . not much there unless you're of that religion . . .

All we need is a grocery. We have an Aldi's going in across town so that will raise our score. Good to know - try to walk to things when I have the time to do so and the humidity is not 80%.

And I'm actually within the city limits of a good size city of 30,000 people. 2 miles to the nearest convienience story (real grocery store is about 4 miles away). The worst thing is the nearest bar is 8 miles away!

It's about a mile to a convenience store or gas station, two to a grocery store, three to a library.

22. 48 which is totally bogus for the location. |
|
I live in a community planned for walking! Many of the restaurants, etc. that I frequent or see daily are not on the map! There are other conveniences that the map apparently does not mark, such as banks, day-care centers and wine/liquor/beer stores, all of which are in walking distance for me.
The map also does not take account the big walk-to: the D.C. Metro is a 10-15 minute walk! That should count for mucho points since it means that I use little petroleum to get to work on most days. Of course the Metro runs on electricity, which is probably generated by coal, but electricity can be generated relatively cleanly and probably will be in the future.

23. Mine scored 78. Not bad for Los Angeles! |
|
What with mass transit being half a block away, and some ability to bicycle (on the sidewalk right here, lol), I'd rank it much higher. The biggest trouble is getting to the airport. Burbank is a LONG bus ride with one change, and LAX flyaway bus itself is inaccessible by less than 4 separate bus rides on a roundabout route (and you don't want to drive there and find out the parking lot is full!).

Nice.
My old place, in the middle of nowhere got a 58. Methinks their model isn't perfect. But it's a neat site.
