THE Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has launched a million dollar ad campaign calling for Australia to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and a 60 per cent cut in carbon emissions.

CFMEU national President Tony Maher today said reducing carbon emissions and adopting a clean energy target were essential to tackling global warming and ensuring the coal industry remained viable.

“For coal communities, there are real opportunities to create sustainable jobs and industries around our response to climate change if the Government takes the lead and sets an enforceable clean energy target,” Mr Maher said.

“As our advertisements show, the economic costs of inaction – in agriculture, in tourism and in mining – are far greater than taking responsible action today.”
